The group stage of UEFA #Euro2024 wrapped up last night, with some last minute dramas, dodgy decisions, and heroic underdog performances. That's what makes football so exciting, even if it makes the job of forecasting so much harder! We only gave #Georgia an 8% chance of beating #Portugal last night - an even bigger upset than #Slovakia's 1-0 win over #Belgium - but it was fantastic to see them get that fairy-tale result. With 36 matches played, its fair to say that our forecasting performance hasn't maintained the highs of the first round of matches, but we're still hanging in there! We correctly forecast the outcome of 17 of the games (47% versus 33% random chance) and the average probability we assigned to the actual match outcome was 40% (versus 33% random chance). One of the biggest factors in our forecasting struggles was the unusually high number of draws in the second and third round of group stage matches, with more than half of the games ending in stalemate compared to a typical 20-25% in most leagues and tournaments. There's less than 0.2% chance of seeing 13 or more draws in 24 matches (assuming the results are independent of each other) so we've been very unlucky in that regard! Nonetheless, our pre-tournament progression forecasts have held up well. We correctly picked the group winner for 4 of the 6 groups, and the average probability we assigned to the actual group winner was 45% (versus 25% random chance). Across all the teams progressing to the last 16, the average probability we assigned to them was 73% (versus 67% random chance). The team who have out-performed the most so far is #Georgia, who only had a 38% probability of progressing to the last 16. The team who should be most disappointed not to progress is #Croatia who had a 77% chance of surviving to the knockout stage, despite being in a tricky group with #Spain and #Italy. Match forecasts for the first round of knockout games coming soon... 😎 #Dectech #football #forecast #Euro2024

Through one matchround (twelve matches) of UEFA EURO 2024, eleven goals have been scored outside of the penalty area. In the prior European Championship, a total of eighteen goals were scored outside of the penalty area in fifty-one matches. These goals were scored by the following: - Florian Wirtz (Germany, 1-0 vs. Scotland) - Emre Can (Germany, 5-1 vs. Scotland) - Michel Aebischer (Switzerland, 2-0 vs. Hungary) - Nicolò Barella (Italy, 2-1 vs. Albania) - Erik Janža (Slovenia, 1-1 vs. Denmark) - Cody Gakpo (Netherlands, 1-1 vs. Poland) - Nicolae Stanciu (Romania, 1-0 vs. Ukraine) - Răzvan Marin (Romania, 2-0 vs. Ukraine) - Arda Güler (Türkiye, 2-1 vs. Georgia) - Kerem Aktürkoğlu (Türkiye, 3-1 vs. Georgia) - Lukáš Provod (Czechia, 1-0 vs. Portugal) #football #uefaeuro2024 #euro2024 #em2024 #stats #statistics #data

Things are hotting up at UEFA #Euro2024 with the conclusion of the second round of group stage matches. With only #Poland eliminated so far, there is everything to play for in the third and final round. So once again, its time to share our forecasts for the next round and to review how our forecasts are faring. Our second round forecasts were less successful than the first round, primarily due to the high number of draws (six out of twelve matches). Typically around 20% to 25% of matches end in a draw, so the chances of getting six or more draws is only around one in twenty. Nonetheless, we have correctly predicted 15 of the 24 games (63% versus 33% random chance). The average probability we assigned to the actual outcome was 45% (versus 33% random chance). In the third round of group stage matches, #Portugal, #Spain, #England, and #Germany should all progress and top their groups. In Group D, #France are more likely to win their final game than #Netherlands, but the group winner will likely be decided on goal difference. In Group E, #Belgium are still favourites to top the group, but with a closely balanced tie between #Slovakia and #Romania expect a nail-biting finish on Wednesday! And finally... With six own goals so far, will OG still top the scoring table at the end of the tournament? ⚽ ⚽ ⚽ ⚽ ⚽ ⚽ #dectech #football #prediction #Euro2024

The first round of group stage matches has just wrapped up at UEFA #Euro2024, with #Portugal getting a 92nd minute winner to avoid a shock defeat to the #CzechRepublic. That means its time to share our forecasts for the second round of group stage matches and to review how the Dectech forecasts are faring after twelve matches... We forecast the correct result in 9 of the 12 games (75% versus 33% random chance). The average probability we assigned to the actual outcome was 49% (versus 33% random chance). While most of the big teams came through their opening match as expected, the biggest upset of the round was #Slovakia's win over #Belgium - we gave that outcome just an 11% probability! In the second round of group stage matches, we expect to see #Portugal and #Germany comfortably progress to the knockout stages, but some of the other top teams face tougher tests. Two tasty fixtures to look out for are #Spain versus #Italy and #Netherlands versus #France. #England won't have an easy game against #Denmark, but I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that they do enough to win. The hardest game to forecast is #Slovakia against #Ukraine, though we think the latter just have the edge. With 2.8 goals per match so far, its been an exciting start to the tournament. Here's hoping that continues! ⚽ ⚽ ⚽ #dectech #football #prediction #Euro2024

Now that all the games of the first matchday in the UEFA EURO 2024 groups have been played, we can finalise our summary. Group D: The Netherlands won their opening match 2:1 against Poland. In the second match of the group, we saw a close battle between Austria and France. The match was hard fought, but always fair. The number of yellow cards in Austria's favour may tell a different story, but this was down to the referee's line, who could have given the French 1 or 2 more yellow cards. The game was overshadowed by the injury to Kylian Mbappe, who had an unfortunate collision with Danso's shoulder. Austria deserved a draw. Unfortunately, this result was cancelled out by an own goal. France were certainly hoping for a better performance. In any case, it remains exciting in this group, as all four teams are roughly on an equal footing. Group E: Belgium unexpectedly lost to Slovakia and are therefore already under pressure. Based on recent results, a defeat was not to be expected, as Belgium were among the favourites before the tournament. Ukraine did not live up to their own expectations and rightly lost to Romania by a clear 3:0. The Romanians' performance was exceptionally good and if they can build on this game, they will also reach the knockout round. Ukraine must improve considerably and their goalkeeper in particular should try to forget his mistakes as quickly as possible. Group F: Turkey put on a great performance and won clearly against the newcomers to the European Championship. Georgia managed to equalise in the meantime, but were otherwise unable to put up much of a fight against the Turks. The Turkish fans, who whistled loudly during the Georgian national anthem, were a negative factor before the game. This has nothing to do with fair play and a team that has reached the finals for the first time in its history deserves more recognition and respect. We saw what we expected to be a close match between Portugal and the Czech Republic. Even though there was an unpenalised foul before the winning goal, I think the victory was justified based on the final phase of the second half. It's nice to see that Portugal are no longer solely dependent on the performance of Cristiano Ronaldo. I'm looking forward to seeing how the second group match day develops and what we can conclude before the final group matches. #euro2024 #football

It is another draw at UEFA EURO 2024, the second in one day, as England 🏴 and Denmark 🇩🇰 finish their match in a one to one draw, the exact same score as it was after 90 minutes in their UEFA EURO 2020 semifinal. Harry Kane scored in that semifinal match, and he would score against the Danes at a European Championship again - this one on seventeen minutes through an excellent pass from Kyle Walker, that bounced off Andreas Christensen's legs before landing straight to the Bayern München forward. Morten Hjulmand then scored what is surely one of the best goals of the tournament with a blast from long range that went off the left post and in; Denmark played very well, outshooting England 16-12, 7-4 on target with 51 % possession, but they could not find a winning shot and neither could their opposition as the two gain one point each from this result. That said, Denmark are now competing with Slovenia and Serbia for the second direct spot in the round of sixteen, as England may have done enough to qualify for the knockouts with four points; the Danes were in a similar situation in 2021 at the last European Championship, finishing above Finland and Russia by defeating the Russians 4-1 in Copenhagen while Finland struggled against the Belgians, one of the best teams in Europe, in an 0-2 defeat. The Danes currently have the advantage as they sit in second place, with the tiebreaker currently being disciplinary points; they will play Serbia in Munich on Tuesday at 21.00 (CEST), while England faces Slovenia in Cologne at the same time. #football #soccer #euro2024 #uefaeuro2024 #em2024 #denmark #danmark #england
