Post#17 A coupling is a device used to connect two shafts together at their ends for the purpose of transmitting power. The primary purpose of couplings is to join two pieces of rotating equipment while permitting some degree of misalignment or end movement or both. In a more general context, a coupling can also be a mechanical device that serves to connect the ends of adjacent parts or objects.[1] Couplings do not normally allow disconnection of shafts during operation, however there are torque-limiting couplings which can slip or disconnect when some torque limit is exceeded. Selection, installation and maintenance of couplings can lead to reduced maintenance time and maintenance cost.

💥 Testing Equipment After A Repair But Before Installation Is Critical! Learn how to ensure a smooth and successful installation This month, we focus on submersible pumps. A few key steps to test before installation are: ~Pressure test mechanical seals to ensure there are no leaks. ~Do an insulation “megger” test of the cord cap and windings to ensure the windings are good and that a conductor did not get “pinched” when placing the cord cap back on the pump. ~Check fluid level sensors or protective devices to ensure they are operational. ~Mechanically spin the impeller to ensure there are no “rubs and scrubs.” ~Test line voltage to make sure all three phases are delivering the correct voltage to the pump motor. ➡For more info on any of these pre-installation tips, email Tim Hebert at tim@aandwelectric.com.

Double Mechanical Seal - Tandem (Series). Tandem seals also consist of two seals in series but it differs from doub mechanical seal mainly because it contains non-pressurized barrier fluid contrary to pressurized barrier fluid in double mechanical seal. The primary seal functions just like a single seal, contains all the pressure and is lubricated by the service fluid, while secondary seal serves as back up for the primary seal and is lubricated by the non-pressurized barrier fluid. If primary seal fails, the secondary seal can accommodate the pressurized service fluid, until a controlled shutdown of the machine is arranged.
