The inclusivity of Cycling: Ask most people and their pre-judgements will lead them to a wrong answer. But the great majority of people in the UK, 92% of adults can cycle. Far more than the 75% who can drive. (https://lnkd.in/ek9jmccz) Children and teens can cycle too. Which means that about 58 million can cycle, compared to only 41 million who can drive. Yes - In the UK, 17 million more people can cycle than can drive! (https://lnkd.in/eUkP-bhf) It might be more, because inclusive cycles enable more people. In fact, disabled cyclists find it a great way to move independently, and most of them find cycling easier than walking. Organisations like Wheels for Wellbeing help with advice, support and resources. Cycling is financially inclusive as well. A used cycle can be bought for £100-150, serviced and ready to go – less than two tanks of fuel for a car. Running costs are next to nothing. This matters for 5 million people in transport poverty - (See the Social Market Foundation's recent report on Transport Poverty for more. Ole Kassow is the founder of Cycling Without Age, an initiative which gives older adults the opportunity to experience the city and nature by rickshaw.    Established in 2012, the movement has now spread to more than 50 countries, over 3,000 cities, operating 4,900 trishaws, serving 650,000 people!   This meeting of generations provides a unique opportunity to share stories and experiences, often triggered by trips into the local environment, while also strengthening communities and contributing to the physical and mental well-being of volunteers and participants. "The feedback we got was absolutely amazing. People who hadn't been talking for years had started talking again. People suffering from dementia would lose their aggressions and actually lift the spirits at the nursing home upon returning from their bike ride. And we heard that blind residents were explaining to the volunteers that to them cycling was all about smelling the flowers and hearing the birds and feeling the wind in your hair", says Ole Kassow, the founder of Cycling Without Age. At The Luxury Of Ageing, we feel that Cycling Without Age is a powerful reminder that even the simplest of gestures—like a bike ride—can bring profound joy and transformation to someone's life. Active citizenship isn't just about grand gestures; it's about finding joy in the small things and making meaningful connections across generations. This #InternationalWomensDay we caught up with Gail, who works at Warmley Wheelers, our community project that helps people with health conditions and supported needs to experience the joy of cycling. As well as her role at Warmley Wheelers, where she initially got involved as a volunteer, she works for British Cycling providing a range of support to their elite cyclists. She's also an accomplished distance cyclist herself. Last year Gail completed the incredible #TourDivide race, which stretches an astounding 2,745 miles between Alberta, Canada and the US/Mexico border. Gail is a passionate advocate for women taking up cycling. She says: "Young women tend to be protected more - they're not encouraged to go out on their own and do things that have some risk. Maybe we don't spend enough time as young women messing around and working out that it doesn't matter if you fail. That has a knock-on effect with cycling, where someone might not try it because they think they won't be good at it. But cycling has huge benefits for both physical and mental health." Whilst Gail enjoys pushing herself on endurance rides, something she loves about Warmley Wheelers is that it's open to all abilities. She says: "It’s not about going fast or being first. It’s more about the experience and the enjoyment of seeing what’s around you". Her message to women who might benefit from a session at Warmley Wheelers? "Even if you’re not sure if you want to ride, just come along and see what we’re about. It’s such a welcoming and approachable place. 🚲 Is this you? 90% of women in the UK say they're scared of Cycling in towns and cities 🚲 Their biggest concerns are: - Road rage (rage means anger, probably coming from drivers) - Fear of having an accident - They feel vulnerable, especially at night Of course if women are put off from participating in cycling then the UK as a whole may miss its targets to increase sustainable and environmentally-friendly transport 🚲 This is UK-wide, but there are many comments from London-based organizations and residents - The current Mayor of London (re-elected today) has been in office for 8 years already and has implemented many low emission zones, and reduced traffic in many neighbourhoods - His predecessor, the lovely Boris Johnson, was also in charge for 8 years, and for all his faults, introduced city-wide bike hiring and often cycled to work 🚲 So what's London/the UK in general getting wrong? Why is half the population scared of getting their leg over (a bike!) while cities such as Amsterdam and Paris implement cycling strategies that seem to bring everyone along with them? - Okay I know both those cities face(d) a lot of opposition from motorists, but they've managed to make changes - London, specifically, has had nearly 20 years of pro-cycling Mayors, and yet most women are scared to cycle there 🚲 What do they need to do differently in the UK/London to bring about positive changes? Dude, where's my car!? I swapped it for an e-cargo bike (cheaper, quicker, more fun). So how Transport for London (TfL) spends money directly impacts cycling to football on a Saturday using London cycle superhighways and via quiet Low Traffic Neighborhoods (LTNs). What do you think of this cycleway? Score out of 10? Things are actually getting better for cyclists in London resulting in the number of daily cycle journeys increasing to 1.26 million in 2023, up by 6.3 per cent since 2022, 24 per cent of Londoners report having cycled in the last year, up from 21 per cent in 2019/20, including increases among people from Black, Asian other minority ethnic groups, who are currently underrepresented in cycling. How? Well in last few years TfL funding has helped boroughs make cycling safer with 157km of new or upgraded cycling routes! Access to cycling has also improved through nearly 110,000 new on- and off-street cycle parking spaces and training provided to 50,000 adults and just under 135,000 children (our family was in this stat).👪 TfL's funding for the next financial year (2024/25), will initially see £41m allocated to outer London boroughs and £25m in funding to inner London boroughs. Our Cycling Tours Raise Awareness!   It's been 1 month since our incredible cycling tour across Wales, where we didn't just pedal for miles but also raised awareness about modern slavery and its intersection with climate change. With Gordon Miller leading the way on his bike, pedalling the length of Wales, we joined forces with Radnor School's Bike Bus, engaging pupils and staff from years 3, 4, 5 & 6 in crucial discussions about this pressing issue. We shared our red cards to aid our advocacy efforts and embraced cycling activities with a year 4 group in the playground, fostering bike skills and that special feeling of freedom that comes with cycling. Every pedal stroke counts in our fight against human trafficking and modern slavery. By encouraging children to embrace cycling, we promote a healthy, active lifestyle while embedding the values of independence and resilience not just during #BikeWeekUk but always.   Raising awareness is key in our mission. Every conversation sparked, every child educated, and every community engaged brings us closer to a world free from exploitation. By shedding light on the realities of modern slavery and its connections to broader issues like climate change, we empower individuals and communities to take action. Knowledge is a powerful tool, and through our educational efforts, we inspire others to join the fight against modern slavery and human trafficking.   Our cycling tours serve as a dynamic platform to spread this critical message. As we traverse cities and towns, we foster dialogue and create partnerships that amplify our impact. Sustrans are the custodians of the National Cycle Network - 12,000 miles of interconnected routes for walking, wheeling and cycling across the UK. Approximately 50% of people live within one mile of the Network, and more than a third live within a 10-minute walk. The Network plays a vital role in giving people the freedom to move and explore, build up confidence, connect with nature and forge lasting friendships. We’re celebrating its impact on communities and individuals across the country. The Network is for everyone - and it’s not just for cycling. It provides accessible routes into nature, helping a PhD student explore her new home city, as a backdrop to a community cycling group, and as vital pathways for wellbeing walking groups. We’ll be sharing more of these individual personal stories over the coming months, demonstrating the impact and importance of protecting and providing these routes for people across the country. What an incredible "Lunchtime with Cycle Sprog" session yesterday, sharing some real successes getting women and kids on bikes, along with the real challenges this poses. My key takeaways were: 1) It takes time. Funders need to be aware of this and not expect instant results. 2) Many groups not usually reached by the cycling industry need to see themselves represented in the initiatives 3) It can take a lot of advance work to get people confident enough to give cycling a go 4) A decent bike makes all the difference between loving and hating cycling 5) Infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure 6) BUT...... infrastructure itself isn't enough - you still need behavioural programmes, especially to groups not usually welcomed into the world of cycling. 7) Recent research is showing mothers who cycle with their kids say it's more convenient than driving - in certain circumstances. 8) Women only sessions are really important, and can drive huge numbers to participate when organised with, and advertised to, the correct demographics / communities.
