SERP-P NEW PUBLICATION: Enabling PWD Participation in Elections: The Case for the Philippines Published by the La Salle Institute of Governance, this policy brief examines current policies on persons voting in the Philippines with the successful passage of Republic Act No. 10366, otherwise known as the Accessible Polling Places Act of 2013. During the 2022 elections, PWD voters had been disenfranchised because election precincts lacked access and volunteers to assist them. The registration process was also cumbersome, leading to PWDs not registering as such and missing out on services dedicated to them, particularly the use of accessible polling places. Thus, this paper argues for a significant review and for the Commission on Elections to improve its implementation of the system. It was recommended that the government and civil society should continuously support these initiatives. Access the full study here: https://lnkd.in/g9KNPyHi #PWD #Voters #PhilippineElection

The Lebanese Association for Democratic Elections (LADE) has started preparing for the 2024 municipal elections by conducting four minicamps across all of Lebanon. I had the opportunity to contribute to the minicamps by conducting four training sessions on media monitoring during the election campaign period. These discussions aimed to assist LADE's potential long-term observers in identifying and documenting undemocratic and/or illegal practices by candidates to municipal elections. Such practices include clientelism, the use of public facilities and abuse of influence for electoral gain, hate speech, and misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. During the ongoing war on the south, coupled with the economic collapse, municipalities should play a crucial role in managing these crises to alleviate the consequences inflicted on people. It is essential for Lebanese authorities to conduct municipal elections this time, following two illegal and undemocratic postponements in 2022 and 2023.

In 2024, #Mozambique gears up for presidential, legislative, and provincial elections, necessitating an update of the voter register. By law, registration should commence six months after the election announcement. With the election date set for 9 October 2024 since 7 August 2023, registration ideally should've started in February. However, due to the rainy season, rescheduling is necessary, requiring amendments to electoral laws and impacting the overall electoral process. Additionally, the insurgency in #CaboDelgado may further disrupt the registration and upcoming elections. Our latest monthly report is now live here: https://bit.ly/49kIgXv

This research on public preferences regarding election models and other democratic attitudes was part of a broader collaboration between Sababi Institute, Puntland Research and development Center and Somali Public Agenda (SPA). As far as we know, this is the only public opinion survey conducted during the recent parliamentary & presidential election cycle in Puntland. It provides important insight into Puntland's political development and the prospect for long-term expansion and deepening of democratization.

With over 60% of the global population involved in elections in 2024, the world could be a very different place come 2025. Below is an excellent tool to keep up-to-date and understand the implications the results could have.
Global Elections Tracker 2024 As over 60% of the world's population is due to vote in elections in 2024, Sibylline has created an Elections Tracker to keep our readers up to date with the various contests across the globe. Through the use of a simple interactive model divided into our four geographies of focus (Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe-Eurasia and the Middle East and Africa), the tracker clearly illustrates the status of each election. In particular, we take care to highlight which elections are due to take place in the coming month. In addition to simply signposting, we succinctly discuss the contextual significance of each vote, as well as the many parties, coalitions and candidates. We also briefly outline the results of those elections which are now complete. Register now to access this tool, free of charge, on a trial basis: https://lnkd.in/e5x9SMGx Please note, aside from this pilot iteration, the tracker will be disseminated on the first day of every month. #RefinedInsight #geopoliticalrisk #elections2024 #electionseason

Local Government Elections: A Forgotten Aspect of Nigerian Democracy, Says Analyst A political analyst has raised concerns over the neglect of local government elections in Nigeria, stating that it poses a significant threat to the country’s democratic system. The analyst noted that since the return to democracy in 1999, only a few states have conducted local government elections, with most states refusing to do so. The analyst pointed out that the failure to conduct local government elections is a violation of Section 7(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees democratically elected local government councils across the country. The lack of elected local government councils has given state governments absolute control over local government machinery, undermining the principles of democracy. What did Saffas have to say about elections? 💬🔍🇿🇦 In our newsletter this week (link in the comments), we shared the growth in conversations leading up to Voting Day this year compared to 2019. We also had a flurry of requests from our readers asking to see the results on Voting Day. You asked, and we listened! Using Brandwatch’s Consumer Intelligence platform to deep dive into South Africa’s social conversation around elections, our analysis shows that election-related conversations have tripled from 2019 to 2024. On Voting Day itself, the volume of discussions doubled. In 2019, daily mentions leading up to the elections averaged around 16k. This year, it has increased to about 40k daily! While we’re still waiting for the actual election results, our results regarding conversation has a clear winner: South Africans are being far more vocal during these elections, and we want our voices heard. #SouthAfricanElections #VotingDay2024 #ElectionAnalysis #BrandwatchInsights
