Creating a consistent daily routine can greatly benefit both you and your loved one. Routines provide structure, reduce anxiety, and make it easier to manage time. 🌟 Although it can be hard to do initially, start by setting regular times for meals, activities, and rest. This predictability can help your loved one feel more secure and can ease your workload by providing a clear plan for the day. Don’t forget to include some time for yourself, even if it’s just a short break. Establishing a routine that works for both of you can make daily life smoother and less stressful. 👏 As always, we welcome your feedback with tips that we can share with other family carers under the title ‘Word of mouth – ideas and tips from other family carers’ . #Serve #SupportIndependence #HomeCareServices #Wellbeing #Charity

Effective communication is key when caring for someone, particularly if they have cognitive impairments or difficulties expressing themselves. 🫶 🔵 It's not always easy to remember when speaking to a loved one, but speak clearly and calmly, using simple sentences. 🔴 Give your loved one time to respond and listen carefully to their concerns. 🔵 If necessary, use non-verbal cues like gestures or written notes to aid understanding. 🔴 Patience is essential—your calm and positive communication can help reduce frustration and improve your loved one’s quality of life. We know how difficult it can be sometimes to stay calm when you’re feeling exhausted! Do you crave the highs of work, and dread the lows? I often think working for a charity is like riding a rollercoaster for the first time. You know it's going to be thrilling, and scary, and you're not sure what the twists, curves and falls will really be like until you're on it. And by then it'll be too late to get off. The thing is those highs, the thrills can be what sustain us through the falls. But what about when the thrill isn't big enough anymore? What then? Where does that leave you? #thirdsector #ukcharity #seniorleaders #resilience #stress #selfcompassion #mentalhealthforleaders #selfcare #burnoutrecovery #burnoutprevention

Does this picture fill you with dread? Not because of spending time with the kids, but because it means you'll be exhausted by the time you get there? For many of the people I work with they dream of longer holidays, time with the kids, of really switching off. But when you work for a charity, holiday means a week of loooong days before you even get there. Then a week (or two) of trying to pretend work doesn't exist, and stopping yourself worrying about the work you didn't get done before you went. And then a week (at least) catching up. It becomes a vicious cycle of working to the point of exhaustion. Is it any wonder that those working in the charity sector are taking less and less leave each year? #thirdsector #ukcharity #seniorleaders #resilience #stress #selfcompassion #mentalhealthforleaders #selfcare #burnoutrecovery #burnoutprevention

When you work for a charity the prep for a holiday is often nothing to do with the actual holiday. When I was still working as a charity leader prep for holidays included: 💡 Writing a handover no one would read 💡 Clear out my inbox 💡 Clear out the fridge 💡 Writing a priority list for when I was back (even though everything will be different) 💡 An hour long conversation with each member of my team to make sure they were all ok 💡 Change the all the beds 💡 Water all the plants 💡 Work out how I can stay late to catch up once I was back 💡 Work to the last minute What does prep for your holidays look like? Let me know in the comments. #thirdsector #ukcharity #seniorleaders #resilience #stress #selfcompassion #mentalhealthforleaders #selfcare #burnoutrecovery #burnoutprevention

Has the countdown to the Easter holiday's started for you? I know if I was still in my old charity job right now I would already be writing a mammoth todo list to try to make sure I got everything done before the bank holiday on Friday, and then a run of annual leave to cover the school holidays. I would be working out how late I could work tonight to try to make sure I could get ahead. And I'd be dreading the phone call which meant there was a last minute bit of work that had to be sorted before the weekend. For those of you living this reality this week: ✅ remember to take care of you ✅ remember you can say no ✅ remember things can wait #thirdsector #ukcharity #seniorleaders #charityleadership #workplacewellbeing #nonprofitleadership #positiveleadership #resilience
