🔧 𝐃𝐚𝐲 12: 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐅𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭 𝐓𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 🔧 Welcome to Day 12 of our System Design series! Today, we’ll explore the crucial topic of designing for fault tolerance. Let’s dive in: 🔀 Importance of Redundancy and Replication: ◾ 𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒚 : Having backup systems or components to ensure uninterrupted operation in the event of a failure. (Example: Having multiple servers capable of handling the same workload to avoid a single point of failure.) ◾ 𝑹𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 : Creating copies of data or systems across different locations to ensure data availability and resilience. (Example: Replicating a database to a secondary data center to prevent data loss in case of a disaster.) 🌐 Disaster Recovery Strategies and Planning: ◾ 𝑫𝒂𝒕𝒂 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒖𝒑 : Regularly backing up critical data to ensure it can be restored in the event of data loss or corruption. (Example: Automatically backing up databases daily to a remote location.) ◾ 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉 𝑨𝒗𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑨𝒓𝒄𝒉𝒊𝒕𝒆𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 : Designing systems to maintain continuous operation even when some components fail. (Example: Using load balancers and redundant servers to ensure uninterrupted service availability.) ◾ 𝑮𝒆𝒐𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒑𝒉𝒊𝒄 𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒖𝒏𝒅𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒚 : Deploying resources across multiple geographic regions to mitigate the impact of regional failures. (Example: Maintaining mirrored servers in different data centers located in different geographical regions.) 🛡️ Techniques for Achieving Fault Tolerance: ◾ 𝑭𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 : Automatically switching to a backup system or component when a primary system or component fails. (Example: Routing traffic to a standby server when the primary server becomes unavailable.) ◾ 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒌𝒖𝒑𝒔 : Creating and maintaining copies of data or system configurations that can be used to restore operations in the event of a failure. (Example: Storing regular backups of critical data in a separate, secure location.) ◾ 𝑹𝒆𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 : Duplication of data or systems to ensure that if one copy fails, another copy is available to take over. (Example: Replicating a database to multiple servers to ensure data availability and resilience.) 🔗 Stay Tuned! Follow this series for more insights into building robust, fault-tolerant systems. Redundancy is a fundamental approach to ensure the business continuity in a data center. It consists of using of redundant components that start operating when primary components stop working properly. This allows maintenance and recovery without impacting users and the business. At first glance, data center redundancy may seem unnecessarily expensive, but when compared to the cost of downtime, the investment appears fully justified. In fact, downtime can cost companies thousands of euros; therefore, redundancy is now a fundamental methodological and architectural cornerstone for business continuity. Find out more about the foundations of #datacenter #disasterrecovery What is #data center disaster recovery? As part of #ITDR, data center disaster recovery is how an organization recovers and restores its technology infrastructure and operations when its primary data center becomes unavailable. It relies on the replication of data and processing to a secondary location that has not been affected. Types of disasters that can impact data centers: ⚠️ #Cyberattacks ⚠️ Software failures and human error ⚠️ Natural disasters Your data center disaster recovery checklist should include: ☑️ Inventory applications by criticality ☑️ Build automated and executable runbooks ☑️ Manage and track recovery metrics ☑️ Integrate the technology recovery stack ☑️ Reference the organizational design and personnel plan ☑️ Conduct post-recovery reviews For more detailed information on data center disaster recovery best practices, click the link in the comments!
