MacKenzie Scott, the prolific philanthropist who has given more than $17 billion to nonprofits over the past four years, is donating $65 million to the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC). It is the largest contribution in the organization’s 45-year history. This is Scott’s second grant to LISC, one of the nation’s largest community development organizations. It builds on a $40 million gift in 2020, which LISC used to seed programs that narrow gaps in health, wealth and opportunity, particularly for communities of color. LISC’s structure, with 37 metro-area program offices and a rural development program supporting work in more than 2,000 counties, offers funders like Scott an opportunity to support both tailored local solutions and large-scale national impact. She has since donated a large portion of her wealth to charitable causes, including: Organizations working to reduce maternal mortality rates. Groups working in the fields of arts, education, affordable housing, and public health. She has donated to more than 2,300 nonprofits, including $17.3 billion (53% of her Amazon shares). Food banks and emergency relief funds: Scott donated more than $4 billion to these causes in four months. Scott's charitable giving has included: Signing the Giving Pledge initiative, committing to giving away half her wealth Donating almost $2 billion to 343 organizations in 2022 Selling 11% of her Amazon shares to support nonprofits Employing a "no strings attached" style of giving, wherein the nonprofits to which she donates have full control over how to best deploy the new funds. 2024 marks my second year as CEO of Kids In Philanthropy (KiP) and as I reflect on what we’ve achieved over the last year it feels like the perfect time to share more about our work with my network. KiP is empowering the next generation of philanthropists. By that I don’t mean we’re training young people to be philanthropists in the future - we’re enabling them to give back to their communities now, because there are people in need now. As the cost of living crisis continues it is increasingly challenging for many to access basic necessities. Many of our charity partners are seeing a dramatic increase in demand for meals and assistance and are at capacity, meaning there is increased demand for the goods from KiP programs. We are spending this year focusing on scaling so that we can increase our donations to charity partners. To date, our programs have reached more than 97,000 individuals experiencing disadvantage through messages of hope, warm meals and other essential items. These goods are distributed by our charity partners, such as OzHarvest, Father Bob Maguire Foundation and Lighthouse Foundation, and we work closely with them to make sure we’re creating goods that amplify their impact and meet the needs of their beneficiaries. Our programs have provided more than 9,000 young people with the opportunity to contribute their time, talent or treasure to those experiencing disadvantage. Now we’re looking to reach even more young people through our partnerships with schools and other youth focused organisations. We have an ambitious goal of reaching 30,000 people in need a year by 2030 - all through equipping thousands of young people with the knowledge, skill and opportunities to be philanthropists. How can local Gift Cards be used to support those experiencing homelessness? In June, Miconex picked up the ‘A Force for Good’ award at the 2024 #PayTechAwards from FinTech Futures. We're taking a look at some of the ways our local Gift Card technology has been used across our network of programs to address some of society’s most pressing concerns. In 2023, Cambridge BID collaborated with Pay it Forward Voucher Scheme, a Cambridge created non-profit supporting people in need, using the Love Cambridge Gift Card to distribute funds to service users via local charities. Pay It Forward partnered with charities including It Takes a City (Cambridge), Jimmy's Cambridge, Wintercomfort for the Homeless, CAMBRIDGE HOUSING SOCIETY LIMITED and Crossways, giving each organisation preloaded Love Cambridge Gift Cards for them to distribute to their service users or residents. Service users could use the Love Cambridge Gift Card as they wished, such as buying clothes for an interview, food or items for a shared tenancy property. Charities noted that the card supports their wider aims, including empowerment for residents and enabling people who have experienced homelessness to access new environments, such as retail, whilst taking their first steps back into society. An added benefit to the organisations involved is the ability to track spending through the cards so sponsors can understand exactly what impact their donation is making. I share the concerns of my team in the United States about the impact of the election on social sector and on our ability to maintain the progress we have made. Donald Trump won the election. What does it mean for nonprofits? American nonprofits, especially those that depend on governmental funding, can expect significant changes in budget allocation and policies. In previous years his administration proposed to cut or discontinue programs that supported social services and community initiatives. For instance, AmeriCorps and Community Development Block Grants. Therefore, nonprofit organizations may need to review their sources of funding and intensify their fundraising to fill the potential shortfall. In addition, tax changes introduced during the previous Trump administration have reduced the ability of some individuals to make deductions for charitable donations. This caused a drop in donations, especially from middle class people, which negatively impacted smaller organizations that rely on contributions from individuals. For this reason, US-funded NGOs will need to actively develop scenarios for how to proceed, including new collaborations, alternative funding, and increased operational flexibility. In some cases, organizations may need to revise their strategy to better meet the needs of the community in the face of possible funding cuts.
