Conference afternoon Keynote Speaker is George Hawkins from Moonshot Missions George stood in front of a packed audience to present a summary of our performance and our case for a rate increase. Before he had a chance to speak, an angry group stood up and one came forward and grabbed the microphone. She passionately advocated for job opportunities for the underemployed in our multi-billion-dollar capital program, which focused on combined sewers. A staff member at DC Water advanced to take the microphone back. George motioned the staff member back and told the speaker that he wanted to hear her/their ideas on workforce hiring and would invite them to meet with me. Six months later, in a packed audience in a church, she and George symbolically stepped into a kayak to row together on a plan for local hiring to improve water quality. That program is called DC Waterworks. This story reminds us of how often apparent conflict obscures an underlying opportunity to collaborate. For DC Water, this collaboration meant connecting the combined sewer program to green infrastructure, immediate improvements to water quality and community wellbeing, as well as local hiring in these same communities. George will focus on how this collaborative approach enabled DC Water to gain community support for a wide range of one-water programs even as rates were rising quickly to pay for CSO control. He will highlight BBP (please come to find out what that means!) – one of the financial tools that enables transformative change – and explain how this tool can be important to utilities of every size and demographic. He will also highlight lessons he has learned from Moonshot Missions’ experience providing technical assistance to more than 150 communities in 41 states and territories. Well shucks... That's not good! Judging from the appearance of the site, I would venture to say this isn't their first, nor will it be their last issue. Don't let jobsite safety run rampant. Keeping your workers safe should always be a priority, but it has the added benefit of helping you save money and keeping you in business. It all starts with understanding what threats exist at your jobsite, which is why you should assess the risks regularly. Doing it once and basing your entire safety plan, training program, and safety culture around it is not enough. Instead, you need to keep updating all these safety aspects as the need arises. If you enjoy my posts, find them EDucational and can find in your heart to contribute to my grandsons cause it would be greatly appreciated. New Year, New Talks🎉🗣️ Article of the week: A happy new year? Industry experts share their forecasts for 2025 📰✨ 📊We are starting 2025 with a weekly newsletter under Article of the Week. Have looked at a very informative article from Building to start with, which gathers some industry views and expectations for the new year. “The past 12 months have been turbulent politically and economically. Does the year ahead look like an improvement or more of the same?” The primary hope for 2025 is to experience less instability, whether political, economic, or social. The government has established bold goals for increasing housebuilding, renewing schools and hospitals, and achieving net-zero emissions.🏠🏥🌱 However, these objectives will not be realized without a more peaceful and positive environment. The Building Safety Act could serve as a catalyst for a broader transformation within the industry, steering it toward greater focus on quality. 🔍Read: https://lnkd.in/eDZAWFrS #constructionindustry #labourhire #fitout

Democracy In Action Wondering how you can get involved in advocating for climate action, or for nature and the environment? I'm going to start a series of posts with suggestions on what you can do. Try my ideas or learn about the process so you can come up with your own action or campaign. And for more impact, ask a few friends to help out. Action 1 - Electrifying Everything Campaign - November 24th, 2024. Rocky Mountain Institute has created a guide that municipalities and other government officials can use to learn about how to implement programs that help people replace the gas appliances in their homes with cleaner and more efficient options, like a heat pump or heat pump water heater. Read the attached article and the material the article provides links to and learn more about programs that have been successfully implemented in other cities. Next email the article to all your city councilors and ask them if they are working to bring in electrification programs like the ones described in the article. You'll get a few replies, these are the councilors you want to engage with. Hopefully, your local councilor replies and if not send an email asking for a response and preferably a meeting. This is your right as a constituent. The replies will likely tell you about existing electrification programs or policy, and in many cases more effort will be needed. But this is your foot in the door. Read the information you're sent and ask for a meeting to discuss it (phone or zoom, etc) These are busy people so you might have to try multiple times and possibly meet with an executive assistant. That's OK. This is the start of them getting to know you. Try and have a conversation with every councilor that replies. That's as far as we'll go today, but if you make it that far you've already started to have impact. The end goal is to talk about specific policies you support. When you speak with government officials ask them what they would recommend you do to help an expanded (or initial) program or policy become a reality. Good luck and get going! #advocacy #campaigns #democracy #in #action https://lnkd.in/g5FNJfi8
