Calling All Hauliers - Lets Train More HGV Drivers We find ourselves heading into summer short of HGV Class I x II drivers again, with poor response to job adverts, despite having raised wages over 10% two years in a row. There is simply a shortage, so lets fix the problem. We have supported 3 of our existing 9 HGV drivers to become qualified drivers and valued members of our team. We have also supported a further 3 others who have since moved on. How do we do it? It is quite simple, we employ experienced LGV drivers who would like to progress. While they wait for their medical, provisional, theory and practical they help in other areas of the business, approximately 3 months start to finish. Our view is the 3rd party cost of circa £2,000 is great value to us, but maybe a barrier to the employee. All we ask is they sign an agreement to stay 2 years once qualified, so we can recoup value for the support given. The incentive for those who take part is a £3,000+ per annum pay rise as soon as qualified, at no cost to themselves, except the study time for the theory. So.... lets start fixing the problem, we intend to support 2 more new drivers this year, how many can you do?

I have a friend who's eager to start a career as an HGV driver, but like many others, they’re facing a significant hurdle: almost every employer and agency demands a minimum of 6 months’ experience. It’s a frustrating catch-22 – how is anyone supposed to get started if no one is willing to give them that first opportunity? It's time for companies to re-evaluate this approach. We need to create more entry-level positions, offer proper training, and focus on potential rather than just prior experience. By opening the door to new drivers, we can fill the growing demand for HGV professionals while giving motivated individuals the chance to start their careers. If anyone knows a possible route in, please reach out. Let’s encourage a shift in thinking – because everyone has to start somewhere! #HGV #logistics #careers #opportunity #change
