Nations have an obligation to "take all necessary measures" to prevent, reduce, and control #greenhousegas emissions that are polluting #oceans, according to a historic, unanimous opinion from the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. Interpreting the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea--to which the US is not a signatory--the Tribunal determined it is insufficient for nations to merely meet their #ParisAgreement obligations, but that UNCLOS mandates that nations must also preserve oceans from #climatechange impacts and #oceanacidification. This is first time an international tribunal has ruled on climate change and the oceans.

The EU Parliament and the EU Council provisionally agreed on a regulation that establishes a voluntary certification framework for projects that slow climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.  The regulation defines high-quality carbon removals and establishes the processes to verify, monitor, and report them. With this initiative, the EU wants to increase the use of trusted carbon removal solutions and fight greenwashing. See the image below for more information on how the EU Commission says it will work. This beginner’s guide to the EU ETS aims to build knowledge and understanding of the European Union’s carbon market for civil society organisations who have little or no prior experience with EU climate policies, including in countries neighbouring the EU. It provides introductory knowledge on how the EU ETS is designed and how it functions. Increased awareness should ultimately empower civil society to get involved in the ETS process and advocate for an effective and fair European carbon market.

Great overview of all the EU Green Deal Legislation that is in process, thanks to CircuLaw. Do you know of any other government that has the capability and empowerment to propose, table and pass 176 Green laws (regulations and directives*) in a 5 year time period? The biggest set of green legislations passed during my lifetime. The PF has links to all the respective legislative texts. *A regulation is legally binding in all member states once it comes into force after usually a 1-2 year transition period. A directive needs to be adopted in the legal text of each member states in their own approach, and can take 2-4 years to come into effect.
