Today is the International Day of People with Disability which aims to promote community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. The theme for this year is ‘Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future’ which empathises that leaders with disability make the world a fairer place for everyone. You can find more information about the International Day of People with Disability here https://lnkd.in/gUtiqbSV People with disability are seen as an at-risk cohort for experiencing sexual violence. Violence and disability are deeply connected. Violence can cause disability, and disability can heighten the risk of abuse, especially for those with intellectual disabilities or neurodevelopmental conditions. Research shows that persons with disabilities are 1.5 times more likely to experience violence than those without disabilities. Women with disabilities are 2 to 4 times more likely to face intimate partner violence, while children with disabilities are 3 times more likely to suffer sexual abuse. Breaking this cycle is essential. Let's protect, not harm. Inclusion means safety for everyone! #16daysofActivism #NoExcuse #InclusionMatters #IDPD

I recently attended a workshop on Disability and Family & Domestic Violence that shed light on the complex intersection of these issues. Key insights included: 🔸 The alarming statistic that 65% of women with disabilities have experienced violence since age 15, with 93% knowing the perpetrator, and 72% of those with psychological or intellectual disabilities reporting violence. 🔸 The unique barriers individuals with disabilities face in disclosing violence and accessing support. 🔸 Strategies for effective safety planning and understanding referral pathways to ensure timely and appropriate assistance. This workshop reinforced the critical role Support Coordinators play in recognizing signs of violence, providing tailored support, and connecting participants to the right resources. I’m committed to applying these learnings to better advocate for and empower participants facing such challenges. #SupportCoordination #DisabilitySupport #FamilyViolenceAwareness #SafetyPlanning #NDIS #SocialWork

Adults with disabilities report frequent mental distress almost 5 times as often than adults without disabilities. While reading this post, you will notice that many steps toward improving mental well-being are similar to actions one would take even without any disability. The difference lies within the "Why?". Individuals with disabilities may benefit from practicing these skills more frequently. Not only is living with a disability mentally and physically demanding, but the daily obstacles that individuals with disabilities encounter can be exhausting and overwhelming. If you want to support someone with a disability, remember to ask them directly what they need. If you know anyone who's a victim or survivor of sexual violence, remember to check in and reassure them it's not their fault. Hotline Number: 1-877-733-2273 FSL provides free counseling to all survivors of sexual violence. Society forgets that people with disability, like everyone else, want to live life to their fullest. I’ve spent so much time in my personal and professional life surrounded by people with disability, who wish to have nothing more than a fulfilling life. But yet, I always manage to come across people with disability poorly treated, portrayed, underrepresented and constantly stereotyped by the border community and media. It’s time society accepted people with disability and not just at face value, they need to have the same acceptance and support that people without disability have. Why shouldn’t people with disability have the same sexual quality of life as everyone else? #PeopleWithDisability #SexAndDisability #PeoplewithDisabilitiesHaveSex #SexQualityOfLife #EqualQualityOfLife #FulfillingLife
