What is informed consent between a Healthcare Professional & Patient? Obtaining informed consent is a healthcare practitioners' ethical obligation as well as a legal duty. Patient capacity must be established on every occasion that an examination or procedure is required. Informed consent refers to the provision of adequate information top the patient, which encompasses: ✔️ The treatment process ✔️ It's benefits ✔️ Risks ✔️The alternatives including doing nothing When responding to a presentation of sexual violence, a healthcare practitioner must be especially sensitive to the complexities and consequences of obtaining valid consent. Informed consent with a patient is discussed in the Responding to Sexual Violence in Adults unit of Monash University’s Sexual Violence Response Training Course. The levels of bullying in the medical industry are cause for distress. Results from the Medical Board of Australia (MBA) Medical Training Survey (2022) show the alarming reality of the field for trainees. ❎ 35% trainees experience or witnessed bullying, harassment and/or discrimination, including racism. ❎ For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees, 52% experienced some form of bullying, discrimination and/or harassment. These stats completely undermine the foundation of healthcare - a profession rooted in compassion and care - and warrant urgent and continued attention. #workplaceculture #medicalindustry #australianhealth #medicaltraining #workplacesafety #respectx

I have just seen this post. I think it is very useful and worth reflecting on. Things we might no think about: * there will have been good times and good people. Maybe worth journaling * triggers do happen * find positive mentors Most importantly MAKE A PLAN!! For medical colleagues in this situation I hope you have access to good therapy to support this! 1. EAP at work can help( this may not be an option. However via EAP you can access independent counsellors. 2. You may have access to private support. 3. Hopefully you are an Medical Protection Society member, if not you must explore this option- excellent non legal services provided, and as a member you have access to a minimum of 6 free counselling sessions with accredited ICAS therapists. #selfcare #patientsafety

Every Survivor Deserves Justice and Compassion: A Call to Action When a sexual assault survivor walks into a healthcare facility, they are seeking more than just medical care—they are looking for validation, understanding, and hope. For many, a timely and high-quality medical forensic examination can be the turning point in their journey toward healing. It addresses their immediate concerns, minimizes the trauma they’ve endured, and fosters a sense of safety and dignity. One survivor shared, "The nurse who cared for me not only listened but made me feel like I mattered. That examination was the first step toward reclaiming my life." Healthcare providers play a critical role in this process. Their expertise doesn’t just serve the survivor—it can also strengthen the path to justice. Properly collected evidence increases the likelihood of a successful criminal investigation, holding perpetrators accountable and preventing further violence. But this responsibility is shared: law enforcement, legal teams, and victim advocates must collaborate seamlessly to ensure survivors receive the support they deserve. The importance of trauma-informed, coordinated care cannot be overstated. It’s time to ensure every healthcare professional is equipped with the knowledge and skills to provide this level of compassionate care. Together, we can build a system where survivors feel heard, empowered, and supported. 💡 Take Action: Advocate for trauma-informed training in healthcare, support survivor resources, and foster collaboration among all professionals involved in the exam process. 📢 Let’s make a difference. Share this message, promote education, and stand with survivors. #SexualAssaultAwareness #TraumaInformedCare #SupportSurvivors #EndTheSilence #SurvivorCenteredCare #CompassionInCare #HealthcareAdvocacy #AdvocacyMatters
