👋 Hi there! I'm sort of new to the Product Communications and Product Marketing space and would love to crowd source some advice! For folks in my network who work in Product Marketing, Enablement, Comms, etc. what's some advice you wish someone gave you when you first started in your role? What are some "can't live without" tools you use to make it easier for you to collaborate with your Marketing team, put together enablement materials, or communicate better with GTM teams? This is my first formal role in Product Comms/Enablement at a startup, but I have done this informally in previous roles before, so any and all advice you have to help me get better would be super appreciated.

Having worked as a Product Marketing Manager at the PCO Group till date, here's one lesson I'll tell anyone looking to get into this role in 2025. Every day brings fresh challenges. This means that strategies that drove success yesterday might not yield expected results today, and ideas you think won't work can surprisingly yield massive results. I recalled launching a campaign that I thought will gain traction, only to be surprised by it's not-so-good results. This unpredictability makes Product Marketing both rewarding and challenging. So, the only way to stay ahead is to continuously learn new strategies, test them, analyze results and adjust your approach. Any questions? Ask in the comments and I'll do my best to respond.

Product Marketing as a discipline is still relatively new, having only become a dedicated position over the past six years. This makes hiring more challenging as the skilled talent available in the market is often limited. When looking to hire a well-rounded Product Marketing Manager, follow these 3 steps to help you streamline the hiring process: 1️⃣ Determine the Best Reporting Structure 2️⃣ Determine the Degree of Market-Facing Skills Required 3️⃣ Decide Between Domain Expertise and Functional Expertise

Dear Brand Managers and Marketing Team, As communication professionals, I assume you hold a degree in Engineering and/or MBA. At the very least, we expect a well-structured brief with a clear problem statement, and organized details about your products or services, rather than a data dump that we are expected to decipher. This approach only leads to inefficient back-and-forth, where we provide options on which you then give feedback. Add to this the ever-pressing deadlines, often expected "as of yesterday," it's such a waste of time and resources and which ultimately affects the quality of work produced. A lot of times, I have observed that marketing teams lack a deep understanding of their own products, particularly in tech, engineering, and B2B brands. You get data sheets, and technical information from your engineering and sales team and just forward it to us. I sincerely request you to be more proactive in learning about your products or services and how they actually work. This will enable you to communicate more clearly with your agency and, ultimately, with your consumers. And that is precisely what your job entails.

Some good points on GTM
Best-selling Author of GTM Strategist | Advisor (helped 750+ companies inc. Fortune 500 companies to go to market) 🧭
Every winning GTM strategy I participated in in 2024 had one thing in common: Strong and hands-on product team involvement. Often in my career, I have had a bitter-sweet experience with product teams. “Here is the product - now get us 10,000 users & good luck.” So many things can go wrong … Vanilla positioning, unsustainable pricing, underwhelming product, wrong ICP selection … The sooner you join forces with your product team, the better job can you do in: - Optimal product prioritization - Alignment with business goals - Generation of the right intelligence - Pricing and sustainable business model - Positioning and messaging to win customers - Orchestrate the right channels and GTM Motions Product Marketing is still one of the most undervalued roles in a go-to-market process. Learn how they can support your go-to-market mission from the image below. 💬 Comment: Who is responsible for your go-to-market strategy and execution? ♻️ Share: To help more companies build GTM strategy ➕ Connect with Aatir Abdul Rauf if you want to learn more about product marketing.
