This updated version of the Osteoarthritis of the Knee Clinical Care Standard is a very useful tool for clinicians. I especially like the sections dedicated to communication. The standard is very clear about what we should and shouldn't say to patients: once they've have been told their knees are 'bone on bone', it is difficult to convince them that exercise and weight management will help. Nine out of ten patients can manage their knee osteoarthritis without surgery. I'd love to see a similar clinical standard for Osteoarthritis of the Hip.
Listen to Dr Norman Swan's interview with orthopaedic surgeon Professor Chris Vertullo on key changes in the revised national #Osteoarthritis of the #Knee Clinical Care Standard. They discuss how people with knee osteoarthritis are undergoing unnecessary tests and procedures, when exercise and weight management is often the best treatment. There are a plethora of misconceptions about orthopaedics. Let's break some stereotypes. One common misconception is that orthopaedic surgeons are focused on surgery, often dismissing non-surgical treatments. In reality, we believe in a holistic approach to patient care. We work collaboratively with physical therapists, pain management specialists, and other healthcare professionals to explore all non-surgical options. Furthermore, orthopaedic surgeons are sometimes labelled the 'carpenters of medicine', focusing solely on mechanical fixes, like screws and plates. This stereotype ignores the complexity of the biological and medical aspects of musculoskeletal health that orthopaedists must understand. Stay tuned as I continue to break down more stereotypes in orthopaedics. #Orthopaedics #DrSekeitto #Stereotypes #Misconceptions

Simmonds-Thompson test, also known as Thompson test, is used in lower limb examination to test for the rupture of the Achilles tendon. The test is named after Franklin Adin Simmonds, an English orthopaedic surgeon at the Rowley Bristow Hospital, Surrey, and Theodore Campbell Thompson, an American orthopedic Surgeon. During this test the patient lies face down with feet hanging off the edge of the bed. If the test is positive, there is no movement of the foot (normally plantarflexion) on squeezing the corresponding calf, signifying likely rupture of the Achilles tendon. However, recent research has indicated that while the test is an accurate detector of achilles rupture, it is unable to distinguish between partial tear (tear of the gastrocnemius or soleal portion only) and a complete tear of both portions. *Rajat Mitta, Acute Achilles tendon rupture: diagnosis and management.
