🎓 Reflecting on the Journey Beyond the PhD On April 18th, 2024, I had the privilege to join a thought-provoking Round Table discussion at the 10th McBiology Symposium, themed "A Decade building Science." Alongside esteemed former PhD colleagues, we delved into diverse trajectories post-PhD, sharing insights and experiences with an engaged audience primarily composed of current PhD students. My personal journey, which commenced in 2014 and culminated in the completion of my PhD in 2018, took an unexpected turn when I assumed the role of Head of Flow Cytometry Core Facility while wrapping up my doctoral studies. This transition marked a pivotal moment for me, affirming my belief that sometimes the most fulfilling paths diverge from the expected. During the round table, we candidly explored the realities behind and after each PhD, shedding light on the varied support systems provided by the program and the institution to navigate life post-graduation. Participating in this dialogue was an enriching experience, characterized by depth, honesty, humor, moments of darkness, and glimmers of optimism. Each narrative shared reinforced the understanding that while every PhD journey is unique, there exists a common thread of shared challenges and triumphs that unite us. My key takeaway from this enlightening discussion is a simple yet profound message: the PhD journey is not merely a checkpoint but a transformative experience that shapes us both professionally and personally. It's a reminder that education and science extend far beyond the confines of academia, enriching our lives with endless possibilities. Hiring- Medtrain MSCA Post Doctoral Researcher project in optical fibre sensing of biomarkers. Closing date 21 October including writing a 15 to 20 page research proposal and career development/business plan involving a placement in a spin-out. MSCA mobility rules apply so Post Doc must not have resided in Ireland for more than 12 months before the closing date. Title-Cardiovascular Disease Diagnostics: Early warning optical fibre biosensor for N-Terminal Pro-Brain Natriuretic Peptide biomarker detection. Cardiovascular diseases cause 32% of global deaths, requiring early detection of symptoms. NT-proBNP biomarkers are crucial for diagnosis/prediction of heart failure outcomes. Current methods are slow, so we’ll design, test/prototype a low-cost, bedside sensing device using polymer optical fibre technology to continuously monitor BNP levels, with a one year placement in our spin-out company. Telling my scientific story in front of 100+ PhD students at this year’s MGC workshop was guaranteed to be fun 🤩 I cannot think of a better audience than a room full of young, talented scientists, learning how to perform research of their own and shaping themselves as the leaders of tomorrow! I still consider my PhD years one of the most exciting and transformative times in my own career. Beyond presenting our work on individual and forensic (epi)genomics, and how we are unraveling novel biological uniqueness, we reflected on important questions: - What drives you to do #research? - How can you cause #impact with your work? - What does it take to thrive in #academia? Among others, I hope to have convinced them that: 🌟 It is important to find one’s intrinsic motivation to research, to make the journey as much productive and enjoyable as possible. 🌟 Meaningful questions for impactful science always stem from society. Connect with the right and diverse stakeholders. 🌟 Plan ahead but stay flexible! Follow your passion, your gut feeling and allow yourself to fail and be wrong. 🌟 Today’s research is so much more than performing experiments and analyzing data. Strong transferable skills will make you stand out. 🌟 While PhD is a lonely road, walking it in the right ecosystem, surrounded by peers and mentors, is the key to success. As we get closer to the start of the academic year, here are my top tips for anyone about to start their PhD, adapted from my latest blog post! 1. Requirements: This relates to mandatory induction, event attendance and submissions. For example, at Manchester you submit a literature review after three months of starting, and at the end of your first year you submit a continuation report and do a viva with two internal examiners. Each institution will have different requirements but familiarising yourself with this will help you understand what you need to do at different timepoints of your PhD. 2. Meet with your supervisory team: This will help kickstart your work and can be a great source of initial advice! 3. Figure out the logistics to get you settled in: This is where you go to all the training and induction sessions you need to access your building and specific facilities/instruments. The start of your PhD can be overwhelming and you will feel lost when you start but eventually that will improve. Hopefully these tips will help make it an organised chaos and remember, the most important thing is to ask for help! Your supervisors, lab members, Doctoral Academy and many more people have either gone through what you're going through or have experience supporting PhD students so they can point you in the right direction. Meet our next graduate studentship awardee, Priyonto Saha, a second-year master's student in biostatistics, supervised by Zahra Shakeri, Aya Mitani and Kuan Liu. As COVID-19 case counts continue to rise, many patients have reported a range of lingering symptoms for months after their initial infection. This phenomenon, known as long-Covid, is currently only defined by a diagnosis of exclusion. Coupled with a very broad symptom profile, long-Covid presents a complex unresolved mystery for medical researchers. In collaboration with the Clinical Augmented Intelligence group at Harvard Medical School, Priyonto is investigating long-Covid with an interdisciplinary approach in biostatistics and machine learning. His research leverages health data from diverse populations while preserving privacy and ensuring fairness. With his project, Priyonto aims to provide healthcare professionals worldwide with a better toolset for characterizing and diagnosing long-Covid.
