Last week it was great to get two industry events along with a few colleagues in Sydney. First up was at the UNSW Indigenous Careers Symposium where along with around 150 other industry peers we were treated to many powerful insights shared by Scott Parlett and Nura Gili: Centre for Indigenous Programs, EY, National Rugby League, Commonwealth Bank, CSIRO and Gilbert + Tobin. What really resonated with me was how important Cultural Safety is when it comes to Indigenous Employment and that although the companies presented had excellent strategies and frameworks in place for hiring Indigenous talent there are so many organisations out there hiring just to tick a box or meet a quota when it comes to Indigenous employment. Also interesting to learn that NSW has the largest population area of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia - my unconscious bias assumed it would be the NT. From there we attended an event hosted by Community Corporate focused on Activating Culturally Inclusive Welcoming workplaces hosted by Carmen Garcia AM (minus a voice!) with insights shared from the excellent Harriet Pope from IKEA, Fatima Qayumi from Woolworths Group and Betina Szkudlarek from The University of Sydney Business School. Cultural Safety was also a theme here but learning that refugees have full working rights, provide organisations with increased diversity and inclusion and enhance retention rates was also very interesting to learn.

BUILDING BETTER CAREER PATHWAYS TO UPSKILL OUR FUTURE WORKFORCE It’s urgent that our future workforce is upskilled by building career pathways with better collaboration with schools and industry. Business Sydney and The Careers Department hosted an important event on this vital subject. The Careers Department proudly works with 750 high schools around Australia, connecting individual students with industry opportunities. The tech platform is licensed by high schools themselves, giving them access to interactive modules that teach students relevant 'future of work' skills, as well as offering virtual work experience placements. At this event, we were pleased to welcome David Gonski AC, Chancellor of UNSW, Professor Barney Glover AO, Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia and Melinda Buckland, Global Head of Communities and Social Performance at Rio Tinto. This expert panel discussed how we can build collaboration between industry and education that transforms career education nationally to build capacity of Australian industry and economic empowerment for the communities in which they operate. And how can we secure a pipeline for Australian industry to ensure all students — regardless of where they live and go to school — have equal access to industry participation.
