Following on from our inaugural National Drowning Report (July 2023), we are now able to share a Child Drowning Update for 2024, forming part of our Expert Lens Series. This new report highlights startling evidence from the National Child Mortality Database (NCMD) which shows that the number of child drowning deaths in England has doubled over the last four years. No child should drown. And we believe that it is vital to understand as much as possible about the contributing factors in order to raise awareness, grow understanding and ultimately reduce the number of young lives lost. The full report is available to download now from our website. https://lnkd.in/ep3J8mab

I won’t get on my soap box too much - but this is why we are doing what we do. When child drowning deaths have doubled since 2020 and some local authorities within the Midlands are recording their lowest ever levels of attainment for primary school swimming standards then questions should be asked. Swimming is a LEGAL requirement in primary schools. If schools across the country were recording the same pathetic statistics for English and Maths then there would be uproar. Why are bodies not leading the way and overhauling this clearly antiquated system that is failing our children so badly?! Except the difference is if children fail their English or Maths they don’t lose their life. Making out that pop up pools are the devil is not the way to raise standards. Recognising that there’s not enough access to water and encouraging children to learn to swim in open water is not the answer. Sitting back and doing absolutely NOTHING to raise standards in school swimming is not the answer. I am hopeful that standards will be set and certain bodies will see the value in ensuring children can access water, are able to have regular swimming lessons and enter the water earlier than Year 4. To me, early intervention is key - taking children swimming for the first time at 8/9 years of age is TOO late. It’s time for a drastic change in school swimming standards - and if no one else will do anything about it then we will carry on doing what we are doing and leading the way. We wil step up when others are sitting back to try and do something about this awful statistic. 41 children died last year because of drowning. 71% of these were male, because boys are known to engage in riskier behaviour. As part of our pop up pool projects we cover water safety, we actively work with children to not only be able to perform safe self rescues but also to prevent children from engaging in risky behaviour around water. We also cover this in our learn to swim programmes. It’s time for change, and we are being part of that change because clearly not enough is being done.

President Biden announcing EPA’s Lead and Cooper Rule Improvements which will require water systems to replace lead drinking water lines in 10 years. There is no safe level of lead. Lead is a neurotoxin. Lead was banned in pipes in the 1980s. And yet there are 9 million lead pipes delivering water to homes around the country even today. This rule will protect 900,000 infants from being born with low birthweight, prevent attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in 2,600 children, reduce 1500 cases of premature death from heart disease, and prevent 200,000 IQ points lost in children. We aren’t just removing lead pipes. We are building thriving communities.
