The Y-9LG is the latest in a line of Chinese airborne standoff jammers, part of a huge investment in electronic warfare platforms. The Y-9LG, or High New 13 as it is also known, was one of 13 People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft that took part in the bilateral Sino-Thai Falcon Strike exercises held in northern Thailand from August 18-29. The Y-9LG is known to have entered service with the PLAAF only in 2022, although its development had been ongoing since at least 2017. It was created on the basis of the Shaanxi Y-9 turboprop transport aircraft. According to Naval News, the Y-9LG aircraft in the Falcon Strike exercise had low-visibility markings and the serial number 30211, indicating that it belonged to the PLAAF's 20th Special Division. According to the publication, a pair of Chinese Shenyang J-11 interceptors and a pair of Xi'an JH-7 fighter-bombers were also present at the exercises in Thailand. There were also six PLAAF J-10 fighters, an AEW Shaanxi KJ-500 aircraft and a PLA Mil Mi-171 transport helicopter. Despite Thailand's alliance with the United States, it has been strengthening its defense ties with China in recent years, Naval News notes. https://lnkd.in/dpdJy5_y
