One socio-technical consideration of AI technology is that it is meant to complement and not replace. There will be pushbacks at first as there has been before and illustrated below but eventually we will all get there. It is this consideration that should guide businesses and executives. The first thing that comes to mind when integrating AI into workflows shouldn't be replacement of technicals, rather complementing them except it has become absolutely necessary business-wise. That is why at this point, AI literacy should be the next big thing for all business thinking of AI integration.

The key to leveraging AI isn’t just in adopting new technologies—it’s in aligning them with strategic goals that drive meaningful growth. In my experience as a teacher, technology was never a replacement for connection—it was an enabler. The same holds true for workplace learning. AI can personalize learning, reduce admin tasks, and provide real-time insights, but only if it’s used to foster collaboration and creativity. A successful learning strategy asks: Are we using AI to enhance engagement and growth? Are we building ecosystems where technology supports, rather than replaces, human interaction? It’s not about efficiency—it’s about creating opportunities for deeper learning and development. The choices we make today in integrating AI will shape the growth of our teams. Let’s use it wisely to create environments where learning is personal, collaborative, and impactful.

We all know that didn’t happen. Instead, despite incredible advancements in technology, we’re still stuck in the same 40-hour grind. Why? Because it’s not technology alone that changes the future - it’s the decisions we make about how to use it. Think about the 1950s “push-button” dream of automated homes. Instead of less work, technology raised expectations and made life busier. The same risk exists with AI today. If we use it just to squeeze more out of workers, we could end up with tighter control and more stress. But if we use AI to empower collaboration, creativity, and smarter decision-making, we unlock massive potential. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐀𝐈 𝐝𝐨. These are conscious decisions - and they’re shaping very different futures. Technology doesn’t dictate the future. We do. The 2024 Work Trend Index by Microsoft and LinkedIn is out! It reveals the increasing integration of AI in the workplace. 75% of knowledge workers now use AI, which has nearly doubled in the last six months. These employees state that AI helps them save time, boost creativity, and enhance job satisfaction. Despite its widespread adoption, many leaders feel unprepared or fear that their organization lacks strategic plans for AI to enhance business outcomes. The report stresses the importance of developing AI skills among employees to leverage AI effectively for growth and customer value, forecasting that AI's role in the labor market will continue to expand. What’s intriguing from an Organization Design perspective is how AI is reversing traditional adoption roles. McKinsey reports (link below) that many transformation efforts still lose momentum midway. Yet, AI is set to significantly reshape organizations within the next six years. Interestingly, it's the employees who are leading this change: 78% of knowledge workers globally are already using AI in their workplaces. The same percentage have started bringing their own AI tools because they're unwilling to wait for their organizations to catch up. In an era where organizations aim to be flatter, faster, and fitter, it's surprising that many still struggle to adopt tools that not only enhance creativity, effectiveness, and efficiency—qualities universally valued—but also align with what employees actively want and request. This paradox raises pivotal questions for organization designers and those involved in business transformation: 1.   If organizational design and transformation efforts falter, have they truly empowered people with the effective solutions they desire and state they need? 2.   How can organizations establish a dynamic feedback loop that fluidly integrates employee needs and requests? 3.   What systems and learning processes can be implemented to support organic adaptability at every organizational level, including management?
