Violent crime rates are decreasing, evidenced by an increasingly robust national database. Ongoing investment in state criminal justice data systems is essential for continued progress. Better data lead to better decision-making, and better decision-making leads to enhanced public safety for all communities. #criminaljusticedata
At the Brennan Center for Justice we’re committed to making sure the public has clear, reliable data on crime and public safety going into November. We know from the FBI and city police departments that murder rates have dropped sharply, and violent crime may be falling too. Here, I walk through the evidence and why we can be sure of this trend. https://lnkd.in/eY7jKm8Q

Crime rates can vary significantly based on location, type of crime, and other factors. In many places, reports indicate fluctuations in violent crime rates, with some areas experiencing a decline while others may see increases. It's essential to look at specific statistics and reports from law enforcement agencies or research organizations for an accurate picture of crime trends in a particular area. Overall, while some regions might report a decrease in violent crime, it's important to consider the broader context and nuances involved. Creative crime reporting can create the illusion that crime is statistically down. For example a robbery or violent attack involving multiple victims can be rolled up statistically as one reported offense rather than seperate offenses for each victim. That technique used by creative Police Administrations can appear to show a decrease. The important factor really is how the public feels. If they feel they are not secure or safe, the manipulations of crime stats are not relevant.

🚨NEW FBI DATA CRIME IS OUT 🚨 Violent crime dropped again in the U.S. That is obviously good news, but that alone doesn’t necessarily mean people feel a greater sense of security. A feeling of safety is closely tied to a sense of community. Many Americans see that slipping away. Engaging citizens in their own safety and security is the best way to both reduce crime and make people feel safer. The same FBI data also show an increase in hate crimes and car theft. Both crimes reduce a sense of community and trust. The real strength of examining the annual crime numbers is to spot trends, not to score political points. Empowering people at the community level to Take A Bite Out Of Crime® should be the goal because that’s the one thing all criminals hate. https://lnkd.in/egPmERDH

• Words Matter • If we want to truly fight fraud with a purpose, we need to react with empathy and compassion. How can we expect a victim to report their crime to their local police department and IC3 if we talk to them like they should have known better? We need to stop fraud-shaming victims and direct the attention where it should be - on the criminals. And...until the stigma of reporting fraud is diminished, we won't have a true assessment as to the magnitude of the crime in terms of 💵. Question: Do we really need to know the overall 💵? ♦ It's astronomical ♦ It's destructible ♦ It's devastating - on every angle • End of Story • How do you respond when a customer, family member or friend confide in you that they have been targeted by a criminal? #1team1mission #purposefulwork #leadwithempathy
