California thistle what a pain. This weekends issue of Agletter tackles the thorny issue. … one outtake… The opportunity cost is the revenue lost as the grass in amongst the Cali thistles can’t be harvested. There is a period when the rough feed can be utilised by cows in amongst it. There is also a period when the cattle can eat the thistles. Because of this we have only valued the loss of grazable grass at 14c/kgDM. The lost grazing has a value of $20,324 per annum on this 400Ha farm. With a 3-spray program (below) costing circa $11,000 this does make a compelling case to have a decent crack at the little buggers.

I read with mixed feelings the plight of farmers in this village near Ijebu Ode Ogun State, at a time when we all are complaining of food scarcity, food insecurity and chronic currency devaluation. Some hoodlums are busy dealing heavy blows on smallholder farmers. Ogun State Government, Ogun State Governor's Office, Adejobi Olumuyiwa. From the story, the village head even implicated the state government, the Ministry of Forestry and another king.
