This iconic photo shows one of our most senior Elders, Mr Timmy Douglas, being supported by young Yindjibarndi man, Dakota Barry. The connection between Elders and the next generations is vital in keeping traditional cultures strong. Our young people are raised to respect Elders. It is part of our Galharra (Lore). Young people have a cultural responsibility towards Elders, which is defined by Galharra. An older man can be ‘son’ or ‘grandson’ to the younger man or boy. You may hear a young person calling an Elder, son. And Elder may call a young person ‘father’, and so on. This is part of Galharra. Different mobs have different names for the Lore. Each system of Lore is different across each nation. It defines who one can marry, joke with, avoid, and have obligations towards. It is a complex social system, part of the oldest continuous culture on earth. And it is part of the workplace too, for many communities. Understanding Lore, is an important part of working with Traditional Owner communities in Australia. Especially in places like the Pilbara, where it remains strong and informs every day life - and the professional work environment. Yazda, together with Sinjar Academy and Free Yezidi Foundation has published a #Policy Paper that dives deep into the ongoing challenges faced by the #Yazidi community. This isn’t just a document but a manifesto for action! The policy paper issues a raft of recommendations varying from negotiation of a new security agreement, leadership, management of security forces in Sinjar and surrounding villages - to demanding justice through the establishment of an international or hybrid tribunal to build upon the evidence collected by UNITAD Iraq and #Civil society organizations. The Policy paper further supports voluntary, safe and dignified return of #Yazidis and other IDPs to their areas of origin in Iraq while demanding that these returns must be practical, and that displaced families should not be forced out of camps or shelters into homelessness.
