Speaking of more intuitive control for #Prosthetics and #Exoskeletons... Today we venture into the fascinating world of #BrainComputerInterfaces (BCIs) and the search for even more intuitive control. However, we are currently facing a hurdle: the sensors needed for precise and non-invasive control are not yet sensitive enough. 😟 Fortunately, there is hope! 🤗 An interdisciplinary team from research and industry is working on the #NeuroQ project to overcome this challenge. 🛠️ At the start of the project last year, we spoke to Dr. Jan Jeske of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF to find out more about the project and what artificial gemstones 💎 have to do with it. 👀 And with this glimpse into a possible future, we declare our theme week over. 👋 PS: You can find all the posts on the topic of exoskeletons and prosthesis control in our account feed.

Scientists from the MICE collaboration have made a breakthrough in realizing muon accelerators, a more compact and cost-effective alternative to conventional particle accelerators. By developing a method to increase the density and location of muons in a beam, researchers can now better control and collide muons, overcoming a key challenge in harnessing these short-lived particles. The team's experiment with a small prototype accelerator demonstrated the formation and cooling of a high-brightness muon beam, decreasing the space it occupies and enabling well-aligned movement. This advancement brings the scientific community one step closer to building muon accelerators that could provide ten times the discovery reach of CERN's Large Hadron Collider at a fraction of the size and cost. While more work is needed to develop an effective cooling system, this study marks a significant milestone in the journey towards realizing this groundbreaking technology, which has the potential to revolutionize our understanding of the universe's fundamental building blocks.
Muon accelerators can now be a reality with this new breakthrough

✨ Good evening from Day 1 of #ICOB2024 in Jena - the city indispensable for microscopy, as Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Stefan Hell pointed out 🔬 He opened our International Congress on #Biophotonics today with a captivating lecture and the latest insights into super-resolution microscopy in a packed Volkshaus Jena. ✨ With more than 300 experts from research, technology, medicine and industry from 26 countries, Jena will become a hub for the global biophotonics community over the next few days. 🌍 Their aim is to network, exchange ideas on the most innovative light-based technologies for medicine and advance the processes for their practical application. 💡 And what better place to do this than the "City of Light" in Optical Valley. “Jena’s connection to #optics and #photonics is deeply rooted in the city's history, shaped by the contributions of great minds such as Carl Zeiss, Ernst Abbe, and the innovative glass maker Otto Schott”, as our director Juergen Popp pointed out in his welcome address. Stefan Hell emphasised the crucial role of biophotonics in the early detection of diseases: "Photonics, i.e. light, can be used very well to understand life, and certain photonic technologies have the potential to detect chemical changes in cells and tissues at a very early stage. Diagnostics and early detection can be crucial in combating diseases at an early stage". Stay tuned for more impressions from #ICOB2024. Antimatter, often portrayed in sci-fi, is a real and extraordinarily expensive substance, costing $62.5 trillion per gram due to the immense challenges in its production and storage. Despite these obstacles, it captivates scientists with its potential in medical imaging and theoretical space missions. Produced in facilities like CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, antimatter's creation is energy-intensive and economically unfeasible with current technology. However, its applications in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scans offer valuable diagnostic tools for cancer and neurological conditions. Furthermore, its theoretical properties as an ultimate fuel source could revolutionize energy generation and space travel. Although the path to practical use is fraught with challenges, ongoing research aims to make antimatter more accessible and affordable, driving innovation in science and technology. #Antimatter #FutureTech #ScienceInnovation #MedicalImaging #EnergyRevolution #CERN #ParticlePhysics #SciFiToReality
