Keep your home comfortable and in tip-top shape this Winter: ✅ Check gutters - clean out gutters and install gutter guards. Make sure attic floor is properly insulated. The attic itself should be well-ventilated and approx. 10 degrees warmer than the outside temp. ☑ Protect pipes - protect against frozen pipes by insulating those susceptible to freezing. When the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit, keep a stream of water running in a few faucets to guard against freezing. ✅ Seal cracks - caulk holes and openings around windows, doors, air conditioners, mail chutes, pet doors, etc. to help prevent cold air from seeping in. For additional heat loss prevention, install weather stripping and seals. ☑ Stay cozy - set thermostat to at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit and make sure your home is well-insulated. Consider installing an energy efficient or programmable thermostat to help keep warm air in rooms most often used without incurring high energy bills. ✅ Heating system maintenance - furnaces, boilers and chimneys should be regularly maintained and serviced at least once a year to clear any buildup and to keep them running efficiently. ☑ Test smoke and CO detectors - make sure all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors work. Check them monthly and replace batteries as needed. ✅ Clear the yard - keep trees trimmed and remove dead branches and debris from the yard. Rain and wind can weaken trees and cause branches to fall and potentially damage the home, car or yourself and others. ☑ Ditch the hose - detach garden hoses from the house, drain them and store them away until Spring.

🚨 Frozen Pipes: What You Need to Know During Extreme Cold & Wind 🚨 Frozen pipes are a big concern during freezing weather, especially when strong winds are involved. Did you know that wind often causes more frozen pipes than actual low temperatures? For example, -10°F with no wind might not freeze pipes, but 30°F with strong winds can! This includes pipes in your home, barns, outbuildings, and well houses. Here’s what to do if you suspect a frozen pipe: ✅ Step 1: Isolate the Problem Area Identify where the pipe is frozen. If it’s a hot water line, shut off the hot water to that zone and monitor for thawing or leaks. ✅ Step 2: Release Cold Air & Safely Add Heat Open cabinets under sinks or clear clutter around basement pipes to allow trapped cold air to escape. Use a space heater or hair dryer to safely warm the area. In barns, well houses, or outbuildings, block wind from entering and add safe heat sources like space heaters. ✅ Step 3: Stay Alert Don’t leave the problem unattended. If you need to leave the house, turn off the water supply to prevent leaks when pipes thaw. 🚨 If the Pipe Has Split: If you suspect a crack, shut off the water to your entire home immediately to prevent damage when the ice plug melts. Call us after the wind breaks, or the pipe has thawed to address the broken water liner. About Pipe Thawing Equipment: We have special equipment to thaw pipes, but it only works on metal piping and doesn’t prevent the pipe from breaking if it’s already damaged. Thawing can cost $400–$600 and is typically reserved for frozen main water lines or homes with completely frozen systems. Important Safety DO NOTs: Do NOT use open flames or torches to thaw pipes. It's winter which means its time to take extra precautions to protect your home from water damage! Follow these tips below to help keep your home safe this season. 💁♀️💁♂️ #1 Protecting Those Pipes- Water expands as it freezes. If water that is caught inside your pipe freezes, it will expand which can cause your pipes to burst and/or crack! Pipes can burst if the water pressure is built up inside, behind a block of ice. TIP: It is always a good idea to leave your faucets dripping in extremely cold weather. 💧 #2 Check the Heat- Checking your furnace by turning on the heat and blower helps your heater operate like it should. TIP: By reversing the direction of your ceiling fan, the counter-clock-wise movement allows warm air to circulate down into your room. 🔥 #3 Preventing Ice Dams- These Dams form when heat escapes through the roof and melts snow that settles. Snowmelt then gets into the roof’s edges and freezes most often in the eaves. Ice Dams can later melt and improperly drain, leaking through a roof and causing water damage in your home. TIPS: Clean the clogged gutters and downspouts. Seal places that allow warm air to leak from your home. Make sure your soffit vents are clear to allow air to flow properly. ❄ #4 Clean and Store your Lawn Equipment- Empty all of the fuel. If this is not done, it can damage fuel lines and other components. TIP: Clear out each machine from yard debris and any oil build up. Sharpen the blades. Store in a garage throughout the winter if possible. 🌱 #5 Inspect your Fireplace and Chimney- Clean out all soot and debris that could catch fire. TIP: Keep the flue closed when you are not using the fireplace. You should not be able to feel any cold air coming down the chimney. 🧱 #6 Seal Windows and Doors- Caulking around windows and doors can help on heating costs. TIP: Put weather stripping around your entryways. 🚪 # 7 Crawlspace Prevention- Crawlspace foundations generally have vents. TIP: Vents should be covered or closed near any bathroom sources to prevent excess moisture and/or water damage.
