August 1-7th is World Breastfeeding Week. Did you know the Affordable Care Act mandated breastfeeding support be provided by your health insurance plan? This includes the cost to rent or buy a breast pump. Please see your insurance plan for more information on lactation consulting and breast pumps.

🧩 "Breastfeeding is just a big jigsaw puzzle. If you just invest in one area, it’s not going to fix things." — Dr. Amy Brown, Professor of Maternal and Child Public Health
Dr. Amy Brown’s work has been a huge influence on my own academic journey, especially her powerful insights into the complex challenges parents face when feeding their babies. Her book on breastfeeding has been an invaluable guide throughout my PhD, highlighting just how essential a holistic approach is for supporting families in those crucial early years. 📚💡
🌍 Recently, Impact on Urban Health and Bremner & Co. conducted a comprehensive review of the breastfeeding landscape across England. This cross-sector research brought together voices from policy makers, advocates, and industry leaders to understand current practices, identify barriers, and explore pathways for impactful change. It is SUCH pioneering research!
Their recommendations—spanning policy leadership, advocacy, evidence-building, and funding for place-based support—emphasize how interconnected these pieces are. Real progress requires a coalition of efforts working together to create a supportive environment for all families, however they choose to feed their babies. 🤝
Ultimately, we know that good nutrition and health in those early years lay the foundation for children to thrive, no matter their background. Reports like this, informed by experts like Dr. Brown, show us the path forward—a path that values every piece of the puzzle. 🌱👶

All children should have the opportunity to thrive, regardless of where they grow up. Good nutrition and health in the very early years play a crucial role in a child’s development and growth and can also contribute to better child health. Key to this is making sure parents can adequately feed their babies, however they choose to do so.
#Breastfeeding plays a pivotal role in a child’s development, yet many mothers face significant obstacles. Thanks to Impact on Urban Health and all those working in and around breastfeeding who contributed to this report.

We often hear working moms say they can't exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first 6 months because of their busy schedules. The good news is, you can! it is possible to exclusively breastfeed even while working.
World Health Organization recommends that infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development, and health.
