From Battlefield to Boardroom: Navigating Your Civilian Career Take-Off Fellow veterans, as we approach Veterans Day, I want to speak to those of you contemplating or currently navigating the transition from military service to the corporate world. As someone who went from flying Apache helicopters to leading business strategies, I can tell you: your skills are more transferable than you might think. 🚁 Lessons from the Cockpit to the Corner Office: Mission Focus Translates: The laser focus you applied to military objectives? Channel that into achieving business goals. Your ability to stay mission-oriented is gold in the corporate world. 🔀 Adapt and Overcome: Remember field training? The business landscape changes rapidly, but you're already an expert at adapting to new situations. Use this skill to your advantage. 🧘🏻 Leadership Under Pressure: If you can lead a team through a combat zone, you can certainly lead a team through a tough quarter. Your grace under pressure is invaluable. 💪 Discipline is Your Superpower: The discipline instilled by military service sets you apart. Use it to meet deadlines, exceed expectations, and rise through the ranks. 💪💪💪 Teamwork is Universal: The camaraderie of a military unit translates beautifully to building strong, cohesive teams in the corporate environment. 🧭 Navigation Tips for Your Transition: 🌍 Translate Your Skills: Civilian employers might not understand military jargon. Practice describing your experiences in terms of leadership, project management, and problem-solving. 👥 Network, Network, Network: Reach out to veterans who've made the transition. Many of us are eager to help our fellow service members. 📚 Continuous Learning: Embrace new knowledge. Your ability to quickly master complex systems (like an Apache's controls) will serve you well in picking up new business skills. 🌟 Value Your Perspective: Your unique experiences provide insights many of your civilian counterparts don't have. Don't underestimate this advantage. Remember, the skills that made you an asset in the military - integrity, perseverance, strategic thinking - are highly prized in the business world. Your service has prepared you for this new mission. To my fellow business leaders: if you're not actively recruiting veterans, you're missing out on an incredible talent pool. 🎖️ Veterans, what's been your biggest challenge or triumph in transitioning to the corporate world? Share below, and let's support each other in this new mission. #VeteranTransition #FromMilitaryToCorporate #LeadershipLessons #VeteransInBusiness

Thanks for getting this started, Shannon. Two pieces of advice I give to transitioning service members... 1. Don’t underestimate your experience...you have done amazing things. That needs to be balanced with a sense of reality and that you probably won’t become a VP right away. Your career level from the military doesn’t easily transfer directly to the civilian world. You likely will need to swallow your pride a bit on the first role to get your foot in the door. 2. Don’t leave behind all you learned in the military. It's incredibly valuable. You did amazing things and have a very unique set of experiences after serving in the military. Those will serve you well and can be a unique differentiator in the civilian world. Yes, a common piece of advice is to leave the military lingo behind and you should, but that does not mean you should forget foundational concepts like “Officers eat last” or "Your Marines are always watching". That mindset doesn't exist as strongly in the civilian world and maintaining those core beliefs that are ‘obvious’ to a Lieutenant but not as much to a civilian manager can be a huge differentiator.
