In 1837, Horace Mann began his seminal work as a member of the Massachusetts Board of Education, embarking on a mission that would forever change the landscape of American education. Mann's vision was revolutionary: he advocated for free, universal, and nonsectarian schooling, challenging the prevailing norms of his time. His belief in education as the great equalizer fueled his efforts to ensure that every child, regardless of background, had access to quality education. Mann's work led to significant reforms, including the establishment of the first state-supported normal schools in the United States and the introduction of standardized educational practices. His legacy is a testament to the power of education to transform society and remains influential to this day. 💡 The following webinar hosted by the Education Equity Alliance is free and open to anyone interested in learning more on how we might shift the inequity in our schools and education system. 👇 Check out the details below
Webinar/Learning Opportunity.... The Education Equity Alliance has now clocked over 1,000 conversations across the Victorian education system about the inequity too many students continue to experience. We have worked largely with students and teachers from low-SES school communities to map their experience of education inequity, and importantly, to then work with their schools or other community partners to enable positive change. Join us for a webinar to share in and celebrate the key insights and priorities that emerge from these contributions. Details below and register here: https://lnkd.in/gYm37jHR

In today’s educational landscape, where academies and free schools in England have more control over admissions than ever before, the question of "who gets in?" has never been more significant. For the first time, research by Professor Simon Burgess and Dr Ellen Greaves shed light on the complexities of secondary schools’ admissions rules. Their findings demonstrate there are a range of largely unused options that could reduce the influence of a family’s wealth and location on who gets into which school. By adopting fairer and more equal admissions criteria, schools and policymakers have the potential to improve access to quality education for disadvantaged children, and drive social mobility. “If we can make access to effective education more equal, we can make children’s long-term life outcomes more equal" explains Dr Ellen Greaves. 📽️ Explore the findings and watch the full film: https://brnw.ch/21wNCXy
