It’s scary becoming the leader of a team who already seem to have it all figured out. That was me in November 2019 when I became Global Talent Director. At first, I really wondered what I was bringing to the table. The team was super talented, full of experienced professionals who’d been working together for years. Luckily, I took the time to talk to everyone in the team, to understand what was really going on. And I quickly realised something… they didn’t feel like a team. They’d all been working on very different projects, spread across the globe, and feeling disconnected from each other. Finally, I knew my role, this is my sweet spot. If anyone could make the team collectively shine, it was me. I played to strengths, avoided favourites, gave meaningful feedback, and encouraged collaboration. But as much as we made progress, it always felt like I was the glue holding everything together. Without me in the middle, the team didn’t quite stick. Something was missing. It took nearly a year for that missing piece to appear, in the form of a new Global Talent Leader: the powerhouse that is Kath Carter. Kath wasn’t here to mess around - teaming wasn’t a nice-to-have, it was a must-have. Kath and I had very different styles, but our values of generosity, authenticity, empathy, collaboration were perfectly aligned. Together, we made a much bigger impact, not just on the team but on the results we delivered for the business. And Kath deserves the credit for creating the hashtag #ThePowerOfWe. It perfectly captured what we created together: a strong sense of teaming where everyone felt valued and seen for who they are. The impact of #ThePowerOfWe on me was so profound that I’ve reignited it this year as one of my personal themes for 2025. It’s a reminder of what happens when complementary strengths, shared values, and a common purpose come together. And it’s the foundation for the goals I’ll be setting this year.
