Industrial action by transportation workers captured headlines this week with rolling strikes in German and French container ports disrupting operations, but it was the breakdown of contract talks between the International Longshoremen’s Association and port employers that is raising anxiety levels among cargo owners on the trans-Atlantic. Regardless of whether an agreement is reached before the contract expires on Sept. 30, there is likely to be considerable sabre rattling by the ILA and that will drive spooked shippers to frontload US imports, if they are not already doing so. If there is a sudden and dramatic increase in volume, cargo owners on the trans-Atlantic could soon find space in short supply and average rate levels taking off with the accompanying challenges of getting allocations honored at agreed prices and avoiding rolling that is being experienced by shippers on the trans-Pacific and Asia-Europe trade lanes. Potential massive disruption to USA supply chains looming if a labour agreement is not reached with The International Longshoremen's Association. It is advised to explore alternative ports and consider Air Cargo in case of a strike, although congestion on these alternative routes is anticipated as well. How will the looming East Coast Port strikes affect transportation and supply chains? With negotiations nearing a critical deadline of 1 Oct, the possibility of a complete work stoppage at key East and Gulf Coast ports is growing. Key implications: 🔴 Massive disruptions: A strike could impact close to half of all U.S. imports, leading to significant delays and economic losses. As well as missed sailings and additional fees for port congestion surcharges. 🔴 Contingency plans: Logistics firms are scrambling to implement contingency strategies, including container diversions, transloading, and increased reliance on airfreight. Expect a shift to airfreight where possible and airfreight rates increasing. 🔴 Automotive impact: Over half of automotive freight entering the U.S. is heavily dependent on East Coast ports, making the industry particularly vulnerable. This pending crisis underscores the importance of #operational #agility and supply chain #visibility for shippers. As supply chains face increasing disruptions, the ability to quickly adapt and make informed decisions is crucial. Key strategies for shippers: 🟢 Diversify transportation modes: Explore alternative routes and modes of transport to mitigate risks. 🟢 Enhance visibility: Implement technology solutions that provide real-time tracking and analytics. 🟢 Build strong relationships: Foster collaborative partnerships with carriers and logistics providers. 🟢 Develop contingency plans: Be prepared to activate alternative strategies if disruptions occur. #SupplyChain #Maritime #Strike #Logistics #Resilience Read the developing story in full: https://lnkd.in/gd3USkAj Image source: Bloomberg | Getty Images

Most American shippers are pretty pensive about the situation, as there isn't any news of developments on negotiations. Port hopping is so far the leading option, but the west coast is already congested as is, seeing record volumes of containers, and outbound Southern California is where most of the domestic market tightness is concentrated. I think diverting to containers to Mexico would be a decent option, as that has proven to be America's most popular trade lane the past year, and cross border capacity there is more abundant.
