On November 5th, 2024, our local Federal Member for Higgins, Dr Michelle Ananda-Rajah MP, spoke in Federal Parliament and commended SHARC. Dr Michelle is on the committee for the National Inquiry into the Health Impacts of Alcohol and Other Drugs. She is an award-winning researcher, co-founded Healthcare Workers Australia, and currently works in politics to drive meaningful social change. Her speech centered around providing a constituency update on services that have made a difference in the electorate and beyond. This is a wonderful acknowledgement of the great work we do and of her support of SHARC. We are thankful for her vocal support of SHARC and to all those in our community who empower us to continue our work.

Playing with Stigma has fatal consequences. The harmful framing in terms like "sicknote culture" and "skivers vs. strivers" are both used by the UK Government to set the stage for cutting essential services. These services are vital for some people in the long term and for many of us at different points in our lives. Read our latest blog here: https://lnkd.in/ebhjSnEh

We often talk about the role of more prominent names and likenesses in raising awareness for causes – people like celebrities, business owners, and other public figures. Still, we don’t often think about politicians in that mix. The New York Times took a different approach last week. It highlighted Matt Dorsey, Debra Lekanoff, and Mike Marshall, representatives running for office in their respective states of California, Washington, and Oregon, who have made their openness about substance misuse part of their platforms. “It’s important for people in early recovery to see a better life on the other side of this,” said Dorsey. “The fact that we’re talking about our journeys is empowering.” He’s right. Politicians are usually thought of as having Teflon skin and being immune to imperfections, or at least presenting that way. But having a candidacy for public office based on this kind of openness is unheard of. Dorsey, running for office in San Francisco, wants to take a recovery-first/abstinence approach to healing the Bay Area’s drug crisis. Still, that approach doesn’t come without pushback about effectiveness. Regardless of his political approach, more people in public office being vulnerable about how substances have affected them gives us a window into their lives and might help push public policy in the right direction if we align with the suitable approaches. Having government people making waves at the local level could be a fast-track to better substance use management approaches across the U.S. Awesome Monday read here from The Times. #NewYorkTimes #SubstanceUseManagement #SubstanceMisuse #Vulnerability #politics https://lnkd.in/euJR6FkY
