One more day of jargon demystifying for our April Accelerator Academy. We are going to dig deeper for this weekend edition to better understand the new technology adoption readiness levels - TRL ➡ ARL. 🚀 In 1974, NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration created the technological readiness levels (TRL) as a method to show the maturity of technologies in development from idea stage, through research and development, prototyping, demonstration, to commercialization and scaling. 💡 This past year, the DOE Office of Technology Transitions introduced a new approach for assessing technology market readiness - adoption readiness levels (ARL). And a commercial adoption readiness tool (CARAT). Together they help assess more of the risk factors to market and investment readiness, examining value proposition, market assessment, resource maturity, and license to operate. For the Grid Catalyst Demonstration Cohort, our previous threshold was a TRL level of 5 or above, meaning the startup had a working prototype that had been through some rigor of lab testing and was ready for a real-world application and demonstration. We will update our application process to include ARL levels for 2025 applications. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), "To get to deployment, a technology must be completely de-risked, and ecosystem economics established so that every player in the value chain has a viable economic model. This means that managing a technology portfolio solely through the well-understood and widely used Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) stage-gates is not enough. Often, commercialization fails not because of the technology’s fundamentals, but because ecosystem economics have not been addressed or critical ecosystem players have not come onboard."
