Today we marked the celebration of the Geddes Centennial, marking 100 years since Sir Patrick Geddes’ transformative vision for urbanism. As we approach our own ten-year milestone, we take this opportunity to reflect on Geddes’ legacy and its profound relevance today. Liebling Haus serves as Tel Aviv’s one-stop center for the UNESCO World Heritage-listed White City, renowned for its iconic Bauhaus architecture. Yet, the deeper framework of Geddes’ Garden City vision is known to only a few. Geddes famously stated, “A city is more than a place in space, it is a drama in time.” In today’s context—amid the Data Revolution and the ongoing climate crisis—this insight rings truer than ever. The urgent need to harmonize urban spaces with nature, support social justice, and mitigate land speculation are essential for building sustainable cities. As we gather to celebrate, I envision Geddes in our Liebling coffee shop, urging us to make this drama a call to action. Let’s rally together—policymakers, planners, and citizens—to create a new Tel Aviv Declaration inspired by Geddes’ ethos. Join us as we explore how we can ensure that our city thrives sustainably for generations to come. Together, we can embody Geddes’ belief that “by leaves we live.” 🌱 #GeddesCentennial #Urbanism #Sustainability #TelAviv #LieblingHaus #Bauhaus #GardenCity #ESG #SocialJustice

An advanced city is not one where even the poor use cars, but rather one where even the rich use public transportation - Enrique Peñalosa . World Urbanism Day, also called World Town Planning Day, is observed every year on November 8 to raise awareness of the need for sustainable urban planning and development. Founded by Professor Carlos Maria della Paolera of the University of Buenos Aires in 1949, it has grown to be celebrated in more than 30 countries. . The focus of World Urbanism Day is to encourage discussions and events that emphasize how thoughtful urban planning can address key global issues like environmental sustainability, economic development, and social inclusivity. Urban planners, architects, environmentalists, and government officials use this day to share ideas, promote best practices, and inspire collaboration on creating cities that are resilient, sustainable, and inclusive for all citizens. . As an architect, I can’t help but admire the beauty of Paris. Paris has had a profound influence on urbanism worldwide, largely due to the city’s transformation under Baron Haussmann in the 19th century. His redesign introduced wide boulevards, uniform building facades, grand public spaces, and modern infrastructure, which became a model for cities across Europe and beyond. The focus on beauty, functionality, and quality of life inspired urban planning movements, from the City Beautiful movement in the U.S. to the design of cities like Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo. Paris also popularized the concept of integrating green spaces within urban settings, a practice many cities have since embraced. But what’s next? How is Paris addressing modern urban challenges? #Architecture #Urbanism #CityPlanning #Paris #BaronHaussmann #SustainableCities #GreenUrbanSpaces #UrbanDesign #ModernCities #CityLife #ArchitectsPerspective https://lnkd.in/dbzFg-iU

💡A short article reflecting on the impact of tactical urban interventions at the heart of Tallinn and their potential for improving quality of life and supporting adaptation capacity based on a 6-month empirical study by my team including Shimin 诗敏 Huang 黄, Brigita Tool and Kelli Marie Jaama commissioned by Tallinn Strategic Management Office.
Last summer, Tallinn’s historic Town Hall Square transformed from a sun-scorched cobblestone expanse into a vibrant pop-up park. 🌳 🇪🇺 As part of Tallinn’s European Green Capital 2023 designation, this initiative invited both locals and tourists to enjoy newly installed wooden benches, lounging areas, and lush plant containers equipped with educational QR codes. This transformation created a peaceful green retreat in the heart of the old town, turning what one visitor called a “stone desert” into a “biodiversity oasis.” 🐝 How can tactical urbanism improve urban environments and community life? The Power of Vienna’s Urban Planning In his book "Vienna," Richard Cockett delves into how Vienna’s post-imperial transformation laid the groundwork for modern urban planning across Western municipalities. The city's meticulous planning and design became a blueprint, influencing cities worldwide to focus on creating livable, sustainable, and community-oriented environments. Planning for human-scale cities: Could the daunting problems of the contemporary city – the challenges of sustainability, equity, affordability, and inclusion – be addressed through the ancient concept of human-scale city design? How do the organizing principles of human-scale cities relate to comparable planning movements such as smart growth, compact development, and New Urbanism? During a lecture on the 12th of November 2024, Louis Merlin will propose answers to these questions. Louis is an an Associate Professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Florida Atlantic University, and currently a visiting researcher at our research group. Attendance is free but registration is mandatory. You can also attend via livestream. #planning #humanscale #cities #sustainability #affordability #equity #design #newurbanism #urban #spatial

"The first part of Carlos Moreno’s book The 15-Minute City follows a similar arc. In Moreno’s case the villain is Le Corbusier with his plans the Ville Radieuse with its uses separated into towers and linked by freeways. The central message of the 15 Minute City is that we need to reverse this trend and focus the activities of daily life in neighbourhoods where they can be reached by foot, thereby saving the planet and allowing us to live better lives." "The second half of the book documents how this roadmap has been put into practice, first in Paris and then Milan, Portland and Cleveland in the US, Buenos Aires, Sousse, Melbourne and Busan, ending with the Scottish Government’s adoption of the 20 Minute City following COP26 in Glasgow. In most cases the impetus was the COVID pandemic and the ways that home working, social distancing and temporary active travel measures caused people to think differently about their cities." #architecture In Building Design., director of urban design at BDP (Building Design Partnership Ltd) and visiting professor at Manchester School of Architecture (MSA), David Rudlin, critically examines 'The 15-Minute City' by Carlos Moreno. https://lnkd.in/db95fCss
