Know thine audience- Sayeth the voiceover I went to the #funnybusiness4 networking event last week, raising money for the fantastic Young Devon charity (look them up) There were two very sharp comics who riffed off us poor saps in the front rows (And by riffed off I mean brutally took the mick out of…) But all their material was tailored to us- the audience And we loved it. As a voiceover that’s probably the most critical skill you have to develop- So with every single script I ask my client questions that help me understand: ✅Who am I speaking to? ✅How do I want them to feel when I speak to them? ✅What reaction to I want to elicit in them? I adapt my read accordingly to best get those results. Then, before delivering, I have to put myself in the listener’s shoes and decide- Do I want to go on this journey with the narrator? Because what works with one audience might spectacularly bomb with another And if that happens, no client’s going to find it funny!
