Loss of housing or housing instability is a major stressor for families. In these circumstances, young children may experience a variety of challenges related to health, nutrition, learning, and development. Director Khari M. Garvin’s Home at Head Start video series highlights the many ways our programs are equipped to support young children and families experiencing housing loss or instability. In this short video, Director Garvin shares how family service professionals can initiate caring conversations about McKinney-Vento eligibility. He also provides practical examples of how small language changes can make a big difference. The tools featured in this resource are helpful for all staff to support a welcoming environment. As the Jefferson County Head Start Policy Council Chairperson, I am committed to adopting these inclusive terms. I recognize that my language can unintentionally harm others, and I choose to make a difference by listening to those affected and changing my words accordingly. Inclusion isn’t hard; making someone feel like they belong is worth it! #HeadStart #HomeAtHeadStart #HealthEquity #HousingStability #InclusiveLanguage #CommunitySupport #EarlyChildhoodEducation #McKinneyVento #ChildDevelopment #FamilySupport #InclusionMatters https://acf.mobi/3QNG43t

"It's time to face these hidden issues head-on. 💬 In both girls' and boys' schools, trauma can leave scars that last a lifetime, sometimes leading to tragic consequences. No one goes to school expecting this, yet it happens. As future parents and as a society, we need to ask: how can we create safer spaces? More social interaction, like school events, could help, but we need to dig deeper. As we reflect on the experiences of children who have lived in kids' homes, it's crucial to acknowledge the significant adversities many have endured. Growing up in children's homes presents unique challenges that can have lasting impacts on a child's well-being and development as reflected by Rachel W Children in care often face instability, lacking the consistent nurturing environment that is essential for healthy growth. The absence of stable parental figures can lead to feelings of abandonment and a sense of disconnectedness from society. Additionally, the trauma of being separated from their families can exacerbate existing emotional and psychological issues. Moreover, children in care may encounter difficulties accessing education and healthcare services, further hindering their opportunities for success later in life. Without adequate support systems in place, these children may struggle to transition into adulthood and face higher risks of homelessness, unemployment, and involvement in the criminal justice system. The increasing number of children's homes being developed across local authorities raises concerns about the underlying motivations and potential consequences. While it may be driven by a desire to save money and address the shortage of foster carers, there is a risk of prioritising cost over the well-being of children. Additionally, the quality of care in children's homes can vary widely, and there is a need for stringent oversight to ensure that children are receiving the support and care they deserve. Ultimately, the focus should be on finding the best possible care arrangement for each individual child, whether that be foster care or a children's home, based on their unique needs and circumstances. It's essential to prioritise the quality of care and ensure that children's well-being remains the central focus in all decisions regarding their care and placement. It's imperative that we prioritise the well-being of children in care and provide them with the support and resources they need to thrive. This includes ensuring access to quality education, mental health services, and stable living arrangements. By investing in the future of these children, we can break the cycle of adversity and empower them to reach their full potential. Let's come together to advocate for policies and initiatives that prioritize the needs of children in care and create a more inclusive and supportive society for all. #ChildrenInCare #SupportAndEmpowerment #BreakTheCycle Sarah Anderson Caroline Flynn Carolyn Moody MBE The Fostering Network Department for Education

This is the first picture, of me as a child, I've been able to post publicly 30ish years on 😉 Teenagers in care Still have a stigma attached, even today. Do you think a #fostercarer would change their mind if they watched this? 🟣Do you think someone considering fostering, would sign up? 💜 I had the privilege of being a foster carer and the blessing of loving many teenagers. (Not bad for someone who was told, "Rachel, will never be able to form any kind of relationship." ❤️Everyone is welcome, as everyone is needed... ❤️This picture has taken decades to come into the light...It would take only a minute to share. 🟣 My pain for the purpose of raising awareness, reducing the stigma and hopefully to encourage people to step forward and keep our children safe and loved.
