The opportunities for applying more precision into farming might seem limitless, but the reason for undertaking an operation/management change based on geo-referenced data should always focus on filling a need/fixing a problem where there is a defined/expected positive ROI or farm management benefit. The Vari-Depth concept for hilling up furrow irrigated cotton beds is an example of managing a problem based on the interrogation of precision ag data with a defined crop outcome benefit. The video also highlights that Rolls Royce solutions are not always necessary and that for some solutions, the old iron or equipment scrap heap out the back can re-purposed with some ingenuity and added tech. For those of you who might of read my post about the variable depth furrowing up implement, here’s a follow up. It has completed around 1000 ha with no issues. We had random points across multiple fields checked against design for accuracy and it passed each test. We found limitations when faced with a large (deep) cut area the John Deere 8RT 410 struggled to stay on line, now this is not a fault of the implement or the tractor but understanding the limitations of the combination we have. The tractor only can handle so much and the implement will dig to depth until it’s out of hydraulic stroke. That so far is the only issue I have come across. The next step is to fit bed forming furrow boards to the shanks to carry a bit of dirt and form a proper seed bed, this will make the implement more efficient and move a small amount of soil to the areas that are lower from the areas that are higher. This will again provide another benefit to this implement and what I am trying to achieve. Adding steerable coulters will help with the horizontal position issue when faced with large cuts, but I found that taking another pass to get it to depth is a good work around for its first season. Thanks to T3RRA and CAD (civil ag design) for the support and interest in this project. Furrowing up is done and dusted this year for this implement but we will get it out again next season with some improvements and keep anyone interested updated.
