What is the maximum magnification you can get with a light microscope? In a compound microscope, the wavelength of the light waves that illuminate the specimen limits the resolution. The wavelength of visible light ranges from about 400 to 700 nanometers. The best compound microscopes cannot resolve parts of a specimen that are closer together than about 200 nanometers. Optical microscopes are limited to \~1500x magnification because resolving the smallest visible details is limited to Rayleigh criterion \(i.e. limited to diffraction\). R=0.61 /NA Where is wavelength in nm and NA is numerical aperture of the lens. So for violet light = 405 nm and a good lens with oil immersion NA = 1.25, you have a resolution of \~197 nm. At 1500x magnification, the human eye can comfortably see 197 nm details Youtube video: https://lnkd.in/dGUPegCu \#nikolays_genetics_lessons

Happy Friday! Enjoy this micrograph of a used spark plug anode, showing corrosion, wear, and cracking on the surface. This photo was taken using a scanning electron microscope in backscatter mode, at 450x magnification. #MASTest #MaterialsScience #MaterialsTesting #Micrograph Image description: Grayscale image taken with a scanning electron microscope in backscatter mode, showing corrosion, wear, and cracking on the surface of a used spark plug anode. Digital Microscope is an instrument used to enlarge tiny object to examine that are not visible the naked eyes. it magnifies tiny object so that they can be seen easily. Lense in the microscope helps to magnify object. Which can zoom in at up to 1000x magnification so you can discover a world of germs and particles that are invisible to the naked eye. https://lnkd.in/gkzytnAF

Micrograph time! This wonderful image shows a cross-section of multiple layers of metal in an evaporator, primarily consisting of silver and aluminum. The metal layers were cross-sectioned using a focused ion beam (FIB) instrument, which produced a defect-free surface finish. Tiny grains are evident even at this 10,000x magnification, owing to the high-quality surface finish and expert use of the scanning electron microscope. Many thanks to our SEM guru, Eric Miller, for this image. #MASTest #MaterialsScience #MaterialsTesting Image description: At least 24 different layers of metal shown in a cross-section view at 10,000x magnification. The tiny grains are visible in many of the layers, as well as some twinned grains. The layers were cross-sectioned using a focused ion beam instrument and then imaged using a cold-field emission scanning electron microscope.
