Normally engineers like to work in execution jobs. my expr of 34 years in industry, best is if you start your career in design. it's a long way. Design-Installation-Testing-Commissioning and when the project is completed, you are in operation or in maintenance job. There are other important things to do also: quantity survey, quality control, quality assurance, technical procurement and especially technical support. it is just a brief intro for young engineers for their career choice

Young Engineer : I work as a Planning Engineer in a Fabrication company which manufactures equipment for EPC projects. I am trying to transition to EPC or PMC role, however I am facing challenges. Whenever I apply, my application is rejected because I don't have any EPC experience. Me : Have you been informed that your candidature is not accepted due to lack of experience in EPC or are you assuming it? Young Engineer : No, I am not assuming, I have been told this on three occasions when my application was declined. Me : I will try to address this topic in three areas 1)  Keep Trying : You are encouraged to keep trying and applying for suitable opportunities. As you gain more experience in the industry, the higher will be your chances of getting shortlisted. You will also be able to perform well in interviews due to your exposure and knowledge you have gained about the needs and requirements of the EPC business while working in your current role. 2)  Build Relationships : Fabricators are the key partners of EPC companies, their active engagement, involvement and commitment is extremely important for the success of the EPC project. You could be the key team member from the fabricator who takes the lead to help them achieve this objective. So identify different ways you can support your client. It will enable you to build good relationships with them. I have come across several individuals who moved beyond their sub-contractor mindset and made a huge difference (addressed in some earlier posts) and went on to become star employees of reputed EPC and Client organisations. They didn’t have the need to apply on their job portals. 3)  Grow with your company : Several successful and experienced senior professionals have shared their own journey on how they started with a small contractor, made the best use of it by getting exposure in all areas such as costing, billing, proposals, estimation, execution excellence, resource management, contracts, risks, commercials and finance. This experience helped them to increase their value and establish themselves as skilled Project Managers, which enabled to switch to better companies later and went on to get good pay packages and benefits. Some of them stayed back, went beyond their job descriptions, helped their companies to bring clients, get bigger contracts, make money and ultimately, they rose through the ranks to the level of business heads leading successful businesses units today. So, you may decide the best approach, However I suggest that during your initial years you need to be like a sponge, absorbing the knowledge and the skills, and the best way to do it is to immerse into the work and learn by doing. There will be variety of challenges and hardships working for either a client, consultant or a EPC, but you need to slog and put efforts in the early years of your career.
