🌎 I think the Sustainability quest is an invitation to be better human beings, and this is only possible if we embrace the commitment to become co-responsible for our mutual well-being, and to have a collective mindset that leads us to making responsible decisions for the communities we are part of. ✅ The Springer Nature Group Sustainability Report 2023 is out today, and I would literally need a hundred posts on this to highlight all the wonderful initiatives presented throughout the year. The report is divided into 5 different sections: ·      Overview of the year ·      Publishing: Advancing Discovery ·      People: Unlocking Potential ·      Planet: Acting on Climate ·      Governance: Working Ethically 😀 I’m particularly happy to see our efforts on People: 1️⃣ Our employee networks fostering dialogue around diversity, community building, advocacy and sustainability. 2️⃣ The number of hours devoted to training to support our growth and development. 3️⃣ Helping us stretch our horizons through the SN Leader Program, and helping us define and grow our personal brand through the SN Ambassadors program. 4️⃣ Promoting fresh ideas and innovation through our annual Innovation tournament. It’s great to work for a company that is unlocking potential. ➡️ What are the big challenges for Sustainability Teams? What is preventing meaningful climate and nature action? ⬅️ Last week I chaired and spoke at a Winmark event “Sustainability Functions and Challenges: A People and Action Focus”, alongside the excellent Nina Buttle who shared some really insightful stats. Did you know that according to Page Executive’s Global Talent Survey sustainability is one of the top 3 deciding factors when selecting a new role in the 21-34 age group. You ignore it (for so many reasons!) at your peril. A personal observation: it was the first event on Sustainability that I have attended where there were more men than women in the room. In fact the attendees were all men, most in senior roles within their organizations, working not in their Sustainability Team but in operational roles. This was a green flag for me – it tells me that businesses are starting to operationalize sustainably and embed into wider business strategy and processes. We asked those attending to share their top challenges and this is what the flip chart looked like in the room. ➡️ Do you recognise these challenges? ➡️ What did we miss? It was an incredible opportunity to listen to an outstanding panel of #ESG experts and professionals discussing the evolution of European regulations, particularly the changes in the #CSRD directive and the new #ESRS standards, and how these are shaping corporate #ESG strategies. Climate change and biodiversity present real business risks. As such, regulation and reporting are crucial for mitigating risks for investors and the financial systems. However, reporting should also be seen as a tool to foster meaningful #sustainability strategies and ensure adequate resource allocation. Data—available, structured, and reliable—is king and leadership commitment, training and communication, as well as effective organization and project management, are fundamental ingredients for a successful #ESG journey.
