China’s Hydrogen Infrastructure: Recent Status and Insights By the end of June 2024, China has 426 operational hydrogen stations, including both fixed and mobile facilities. Notably, 19 new hydrogen refueling stations were established in the first half of 2024 alone. (Source: Hydrogen Energy Industry Promotion Association) Guangdong Province leads the nation with 68 stations, followed by Shandong, Hebei, Jiangsu, Hubei, Zhejiang, Shanxi, and Henan, each with more than 20 stations. Meanwhile, Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan, Anhui, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, and Chongqing each host between 10 and 20 stations, while the remaining provinces and cities have fewer than 10. Recent research and observations by Shentou Hydrogen highlight a steady shift in China's hydrogen market strategy. Initially, the infrastructure primarily supported smaller stations catering to passenger cars. However, the focus has now shifted toward larger hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) with a daily capacity of at least 2 tons of hydrogen. These stations, designed to be more economically viable and to drive the industrialization of hydrogen, specifically serve commercial vehicle fleets like H2 trucks or buses, particularly in concentrated industrial hubs where hydrogen supply and demand are substantial. #HydrogenEnergy #GreenEnergy #Innovation #Hydrogen #ShentouGroup #ChinaHydrogen #HydrogeninChina

China already accounted for 60% of global electrolyzer shipments in 2022 and 2023 before naming the advancement of the hydrogen sector as "one of the nation's fundamental industrial tasks this year". New targets are centered around getting fuel cell vehicles on the road but this push will likely have a positive effect on the green energy industry as a whole by incentivizing the development of lower cost and higher efficiency technologies in hydrogen electrolysis, storage, and transportation. https://lnkd.in/eRc7qaiH

Hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks, which sometimes cost over RMB1 million, could reach life-cycle cost parity with diesel trucks in China by 2027, a milestone which the world’s biggest producer and consumer of the zero-emission energy source, seeks to achieve eight years ahead of Europe. This will push forward the country’s ambition to dominate the market for hydrogen fuel cells in the transport sector as Beijing’s enabling environment starts paying off, said Robin Lin, chairman and president of Refire Group, a Chinese supplier of hydrogen fuel cell technologies. https://lnkd.in/gyPxpkGt South China Morning Post SCMP #hydrogen #energytransition #transportation #climatechange #cleanenergy

Western governments fear #China could take the lead in yet another major #green #energy market: #hydrogen. But, as Katrina Northrop reports, the hydrogen industry is far from settled. For years, Chinese #solar companies have led the world in harnessing the power of the sun. Now the country is competing hard in the race to produce more energy from the universe’s most abundant element — hydrogen. The latest landmark for China’s developing industry came last week, when Shanghai-based hydrogen #technology company REFIRE Group filed for an initial public offering in Hong Kong that could raise more than $100 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. Refire produces essential equipment such as #electrolyzers, which produce hydrogen with electricity, as well as #fuel cells which use the gas to power products such as electric vehicles. Firms like Refire have already helped China achieve a significant role in the emerging hydrogen power supply chain. The country is the largest producer and consumer of hydrogen globally, and as of last year, controls more than one-third of global electrolyzer manufacturing: Europe and North America respectively control 27 percent and 15 percent, according to the Clean Hydrogen Monitor. As the market rapidly scales up, #policymakers and companies outside of China worry that the hydrogen industry will follow the same trajectory as solar — where the Chinese #government poured subsidies into supporting companies, pushing down prices for panels and other products so far that it effectively wiped out foreign competitors. The global landscape for the hydrogen industry, however, is far from settled. For the article in full, follow the link below:

How is the hydrogen economy progressing worldwide? International Energy Agency (IEA) published their Global Hydrogen Review 2024 couple of days ago (link in the comments). Here are few highlight incase you have not had time to read it yet: 👉 Final investment decisions have doubled in the last 12 month reaching the total electrolyser capacity of 20 GW (globally). 👉 Of the announced FIDs (6 GW) in last 12 months China accounts 40%. 👉Although decisions have been made FIDs remain low, because investors wait for governments to clarify regulation. 👉The report highlight a gap between government goals for production and demand. The review suggest that governments should take bolder actions on developing demand. 👉 Recommendation for governments to provide long-term visibility over the lever and form of support. I have learned also that it is vital in this global competition, to build such a regulation and permitting processes which supports the investment decisions instead of slowing them down. There is also a high demand for European level CCU regulation, many industries are waiting on long-term view for this regulations. And just to add in order to advance hydrogen economy faster, let's not forget the hydrogen derivates, especially eMethane is a drop-in fuel that can substitute fossil natural gas as we speak. #hydrogeneconomy #powertox
