Budget 2024: “Small gestures” not enough for SMEs There were some attention-grabbing headlines with a further 2p cut to employee national insurance and significant change to the non-dom regime but what about our SMEs? We know that SMEs are the backbone of the UK economy providing local employment and significant contribution to the govt coffers but with over 25,000 businesses falling into liquidation in 2023, has the 2024 Budget done enough to help ease the challenges of the current economic climate? The welcome announcements include the increase of the VAT threshold to £90,000 from 1 April 2024 and a further £200m of funding to extend the Recovery Loan Scheme (now with optimistic rebrand, the “Growth Guarantee Scheme”) running until the end of March 2026. In addition the ‘full expensing’ relief for capital investment has been widened to include leased assets. But many feel this was a missed opportunity to set out more detailed plans on tax reliefs or growth incentives for our SME businesses. Fiscal drag will continue to bring these businesses into a more complex tax arena aimed at larger multinationals and this adds further challenge to already difficult times. With all due respect, 3 hrs is too short. Hopefully there is another, more thorough review and consultation for the bill by professionals in the industry, the academic institutions, and other similar stakeholders over a longer period if time to determine the validity of the bill and come up with a concrete decision that is representative of the population and their best interest.

I have often wondered if I have courage or I simply just don’t realise the magnitude of the things I take up. While I always have a vision in mind my process is to work backwards. Vision - Different elements required for the vision - goals to achieve those elements - steps to take for the goals. Therefore, at any given time I am just looking at the one step that I am required to take. I wonder if there is any other and better way to do this. Any thoughts or ideas that I can make my own? #courage #vision #goals

Wait…how can it be? It can’t be true. There is a caveat here I believe. By letting others take charge, does not mean expecting someone to bear the responsibility or pushing them towards it. I’d say that will be a recipe for disaster. I read somewhere that a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still. And so if someone is expected to take charge, either they won’t do it or do a shoddy job of it. The key is in creating a pull. Without a reward, individual motivations are not channeled. As with the “swagger” that comes from taking charge, comes with responsibility. This reward need not be financial, but could also be in appreciation, positive affirmation, respect, a better plan for growth, an opportunity to leave a legacy, etc. I read this in the book How to win friends and influence people by Dale Carnegie that the greatest desire of life is the need to be appreciated. So if you want to be in charge securely, and not worry about the destiny of the task, create a pull for others to take charge, raise leadership instead of subordination. Leaders are motivated individuals. Cannot ignore the motivation part whatsoever!

Planting native plants support healthy urban ecosystems and biodiversity. There are organizations that can help residents make the switch from lawns to native plants. Consider making the change yourself, cut down on water, and support ecosystem services for wildlife and people alike

Indeed. For sustainability, we need to design a system with a vision and strategy in place for new leaders to grow and for people to be empowered. #designforgood #innovation #designleadership
