#workinghours #businessculturedifference Spending two weeks this April in #Germany on a business trip, I was reminded by the weather of the saying "April, April, der macht, was er will"! But now we have #May, the warmer weather is coming and I think every worker/employee in Germany is looking forward to this month, where there is hardly a full work week to be found (especially if you get Brückentage ("bridge days"). 👉 1. of May also known as Labor Day 👉 Ascension Day or "Christi Himmelfahrt" and in Germany also Father's Day 👉 Pfingstsonntag & Pfingstmontag or Pentacost Sunday & Monday 👉 Corpus Christi Day or "Fronleichnams Tag", celebrated in the southern parts of Germany Now keep in mind, that when you have a German Subsidiary in the US, your US colleagues will have a hard time catching you in your German office! The time difference is one thing but now we have these holidays piling up in one month after we had Ski and Easter vacations in March/April in Germany! When I read in the German paper the discussion of a 32-hour workweek, I nearly fell off my chair! I don't know, but I have a hard time wrapping my head around these shorter working hours, and ample vacation times. Just think about the month of May in Germany - good luck catching a colleague on the other side of the Atlantic! #labor #economy #maiglöckchen

I know it says "gentle reminder", but let's be honest here...it's 2024 and these holidays are listed on the secular calendar. I'm not going to be "demure" about this one - please stop planning events or essential meetings or exams for these dates. "But Beth! There are *so* many holidays for all the different religions! If we had to block them all, it would be too much. We can't possibly account for everyone." Correct, you can't. However, you can be mindful about your employee population and get to know your people. You can avoid the major holidays and you can give floating holidays to all employees so that they can observe their practices. You'd never plan an all-team mandatory meeting for Christmas Day, right?

I'm off on holiday tomorrow - a much needed break after having to postpone it from earlier in the year due to circumstances beyond anyone's control! But that got me thinking about how other business leaders treat holidays? Do you completely switch off? Are you in frequent contact with the office? Occasional contact? Or not at all? I know 100% that no-one from my team will be on contact with me when I am away. Perhaps if a site burnt down they may be, but not otherwise. In fact, I learned very early on in my business career, that holidays were a good opportunity for people to grow. Give someone else one of my normal tasks whilst I am away, and they generally did a great job. So much so, that they could keep it permanently when I got back. One less thing for me to do. Win-win. It comes down to how much you trust your people. So, how many times do you contact people from your business when away? Every day? Every other day? Once a week? Or not at all? Let me know. (I hope it's the latter!)
