I’m sure I’m not the only one in this boat. When you tell people that community engagement gives you joy or that you love volunteering, the way they look at you is often puzzling ,like, "What are you saying? Volunteering doesn’t pay; it can’t put food on your table." I just give them my bombastic eye, thinking, "You just can’t understand." 😄 But I know many of you do understand. Volunteering is the best way to start my week. I've been lucky to work at multiple jobs that accommodate my weekly volunteer sessions. While I give back because I want to enrich my life and others' lives in my community, volunteering has also helped my work. Here's how: ➕ New industries: Volunteering allows you to use your skills in a sector that may be different than your "normal 9-5." ➕ Community: You get to know more people in your neighborhood by getting involved in local nonprofits. ➕ Diverse perspectives: I often work alongside people who think like me and who are working toward similar goals. THE POWER OF GIVING BACK; A PERSONAL REFLECTION. Volunteering is more than just a way to contribute to a cause; it's a transformative experience that deepens our understanding of community and compassion. Leading the Zero Hunger project with #Thementorandmenteeinitiative (MAMA INITIATIVE) was a profound reminder of how impactful even small acts of kindness can be. With just 50,000 naira, we were able to feed 100 individuals in Dawakin Kudu, making a tangible difference in their lives. This experience reinforced the idea that our efforts, however modest, have the power to create significant change. It also highlighted the importance of collective action and the strength we find in community support. Every act of giving back to the society whether through time, resources, or skills can spark positive change and inspire others to join the cause.
