Tracking and analysing objects in #Space through instruments positioned on the ground and through orbital space assets. This is the goal of Space Situational Awareness (SSA), which focuses on observing and understanding Space objects, especially in Low Earth Orbit. 🛰️ Activities related to Space Situational Awareness include object tracking, threat characterisation and analysis of the data collected. The use of Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST) systems allows SSA to be the crucial enabling factor for achieving effective Space Domain Awareness (SDA). SDA is a primarily military concept that signifies comprehensive awareness of everything happening in Space. In the civil sphere, SSA focuses mainly on managing so-called unintentional threats, that is, Space debris orbiting the Earth, while SST systems monitor and track such objects without needing to identify them to prevent collisions and ensure the safe and continuous operation of Space infrastructures. 📡 The heart of Space Domain Awareness and Space Situational Awareness activities lies in Command and Control (C2) systems which, also thanks to #ArtificialIntelligence algorithms, process and analyse data from sophisticated sensors, providing an integrated and real-time view of Space activities. Satellites play Hide and Seek 🛰️ Despite advancements in space surveillance, #military satellites can still evade detection through various techniques. China's Shenlong spaceplane recently released a smaller companion craft, which went unnoticed for some time. Nations use methods like radar-absorbent materials, non-reflective coatings, and strategic maneuvers to hide #satellites. These stealth tactics pose challenges for the U.S. and its allies in tracking potential threats in orbit. Improved sensors, AI, and international cooperation are crucial for enhancing #space domain awareness and countering these stealthy moves.

In a recent article, The Guardian highlighted the growing concerns surrounding space debris, particularly in light of the Russian satellite debris posing a significant threat to the International Space Station. As the number of satellites and space debris increases, the risks to both manned and unmanned space missions escalate. This critical issue underscores the necessity for advanced space situational awareness (SSA) solutions. NorthStar is at the forefront of delivering essential SSA capabilities through our innovative space-based solutions. By providing precise tracking and monitoring of space objects, we mitigate the dangers posed by orbital debris, ensuring the safety and sustainability of space operations for both commercial and government entities. Our commitment to a safer space environment is not just a mission—it's a responsibility we proudly uphold. #SpaceDomainAwareness #SpaceSustainability

GEO orbits are of great strategic relevance and highly contested by large commercial operators and governments. In GEO there are over 600 catalogued satellites and, most likely, many other uncatalogued. Collision, interference, sabotage and espionage are real risks in GEO orbits. Damaged GEO assets affect telecommunications, navigation, internet and television systems with civil and military use. Space Domain Awareness tools are crucial to protect space assets. Good quality tools require accurate and reliable data, which ThothX provides.

Your Space Force #SSCSpaceSensing team is setting the pace! In only 15 months after contract award, the EO/IR Weather System (EWS) demonstration cubesat hit its 'first light' milestone on 12 Jun! Beyond showing speed of how we can #SenseMakeSenseWin, this EWS demonstration will also explore emerging space-based Electro-Optical Infrared (EO/IR) radiometric imaging technology, using a smaller sensor, to provide timely weather imagery data from Low Earth Orbit. This data is essential to provide accurate weather forecasts to our warfighters so they can confidently plan and execute their missions.

The reports about Russia’s satellite, Cosmos 2576, suggest it is a counterspace weapon and is in a similar orbit to U.S. reconnaissance satellites. U.S. officials have expressed concern that this satellite may be capable of attacking other satellites. The launch occurred in May 2024, and Russia has not provided detailed information about the satellite’s purpose. This launch follows previous similar actions by Russia, leading to increased tensions about space militarization . Russia’s satellite “killer” satellite and its proximity to U.S. satellites raise serious concerns about space security. Under the 1976 treaty, the U.S. cannot shoot down any satellites, including potential threats, because of the risk of escalating tensions. Space sustainability should be a top priority. We’ve seen how space debris threatens satellites, and it’s only a matter of time before it causes irreversible damage. Just as we fight environmental terrorism on Earth, the same principles should apply in space. Launching “junk” that destroys satellites, intentionally or not, is as dangerous as polluting our planet. It’s time to tackle space pollution before it’s too late. Let’s invest in cleaner technologies, better regulations, and take responsibility for the future of both our planet and space. #SpaceSustainability #SpaceDebris #EnvironmentalAwareness #Leadership #TechInnovation #SpaceSecurity #ClimateAction #SpacePollution #InternationalRelations #Sustainability
