This term the Grade 0’s have been exploring simple machines such as gears, levers & pulleys. We have started each lesson with a SciShow Kids video & then headed off to our Lego Early Simple Machines boxes (Set 9656) for some hands-on learning. Students worked in teams, following the Lego building instructions to build cars, hockey players, swings & elevators. . This week we read one of my favourite STEAM books - Izzy Gizmo & the Invention Convention. The students used their knowledge of simple machines to create their own inventions with the Lego. . These lessons have been such fun, I have loved seeing the students fully engaged in their learning, applying their knowledge through experimentation, problem solving, creativity and collaboration. . On Thursday, System32 (Team 20074) and Murphy's Law (Team 20087) joined forces to do some prep work for an upcoming outreach event. In one month, Haas Hall Robotics will host its 2nd Annual Robotics Workshop for the Girl Scouts of Southern Washington County. This event is open to girls in grades K-6 who are involved in any one of the 20 active troops in our area. The event will focus on designing robots and will use Lego to teach mechanical concepts. Participants will move through stations learning about 1) gears, 2) wheels and axles, and 3) connections for strength or movability before separating into age-based groups to design their own robots!
