One the aspects I have always liked about the FTR Transportation Conference, which I have missed just once since 2010, is that it is chock-full of content and doesn't dedicate big blocks of time to a vendor exhibition – a rarity for industry events. Still, the conference has plenty of time for networking, including ample breaks during the day, social events each night (more on that tomorrow), and one of my favorite traditions, which is the Indy Canal Walk/Run. For early-ish risers (it used to be even earlier in the morning), the walk-run is a great way to combine networking with exercise. It's a win-win. And it's as taxing on your body and heart as you want it to be. Runners can run, and walkers can walk. If you prefer to stroll, that's fine, too. For anyone who has attended the JOC.com Inland Distribution Conference in the past, you know it is unique in a sea of trucking, intermodal and logistics conferences. It has long been a focused gathering of shippers and key figures in the truckload, LTL, drayage, rail, and intermodal space, with a program unsurpassed in its breadth and depth. That’s because, as with all Journal of Commerce events, the program is built cradle to grave by our editorial team in a completely independent manner. The people on stage are there because William Cassidy Ari Ashe and I deem them to be the best people to speak about a particular subject based on our editorial coverage of those areas throughout the year. No other reason. The program is the core of the Inland conference. We don’t put on exhibitions or trade shows. We hold programming-centric events that foster commercial networking and activity. We know people’s time is precious, and that travel budgets are getting more scrutiny. We know spending time and money on coming to a conference has to translate into value. As we look ahead to the 2024 edition of the event, none of that will change. The program planning, already well underway, is still being managed by our editorial team. The location of the conference - in the heart of Chicago, North America’s freight hub - also remains the same. Chicago is the natural home for the Inland conference, as it's the confluence of North America’s major railroads, a major air cargo hub, and also a nexus for many of the country’s freight brokers, carriers, and technology providers. But all of this doesn’t mean #Inland24 will be the same as it’s been in the past. And that’s because the focus of this year’s event will be broader than it’s ever been. Ultimately, our events are designed to serve the needs of cargo owners, but in order to effectively do that, the event also needs to provide value to all the parties that serve cargo owners. The domestic and intermodal freight industries rely on a coalition of service providers - asset-based and non-asset-based, customer service and technology focused - and each of those sectors needs to feel they are being heard and can derive value from being part of the conference. To that end, we have a range of plans in the works to make Inland24 the most holistic version of the conference to date. I’m beyond excited to share some of those plans with you on March 25, when we launch registration for this year’s event. Mark your calendars now - Sept 30-Oct 2 in downtown Chicago.
