In the May issue of Energy in Buildings & Industry (EiBI) magazine, our expert Tim Tanner, Product technical manager - Ventilation technology explains all about the air management challenges of exposed ceilings and how to overcome them. Whilst exposed ceilings are an increasingly popular choice amongst architects mostly for aesthetics, with the absence of ceiling surfaces there is essentially the loss of the Coanda effect, which prevents the dumping of cold air in to a room space. It can be even more challenging when these spaces need heating and cooling, as without a suspended ceiling warm supply air will stratify rather than serve the occupied zone which adversely can result in wasting energy, slowing the rate of temperature change and possibly creating discomfort for occupants (due to high temperature gradients between head and ankle). TROX has a range of options specifically designed for exposed ceiling installations, including the new RFD-V with its integral thermal actuator and adjustable internal sleeve mechanism, enabling the unit to automatically switch between horizontal or vertical air discharge.
