I spent a whole three minutes ‘composing’ this song. Thirty seconds inputting the instructions to the Generative AI platform Sona, two an a half minutes listening to the results. Have a listen. https://lnkd.in/ekPAnYnR What do you think? Scary isn’t it? It has the formula for a catchy tune and appeals to a micro-audience. Will it qualify for Eurovision? Probably not. But it poses one really big question. With creativity being so easily outsourced to AI, will more artists, music streamers, or creatives be negatively impacted? I think so. And who gets paid the royalties for this track? Me or Hal? Which takes me onto the point I wanted to make. So many artists pour their experience, hurt, angst, pain, failure, learnings, and sweat into generating great music. It’s what compels us to listen to it - to be touched by their experiences in one song. If it’s good enough, we stream their albums, we see them in concert, we follow them on social media. We buy into them: become invested in them. Appreciate them. Become fans. For me, this is part of why I love music, and why, when hearing the results of what AI can do, a little piece of the Swifty in me just died. What do you think?
