In a compelling article by Conor Dougherty in The New York Times, we're reminded that the affordable housing crisis is a widespread challenge across the United States, not just localized to specific cities like Seattle. My latest submission to the Cheektowaga Bee, in today’s edition. Addressing housing affordability is a complex issue. No single policy proposal will address issues with housing affordability, supply, and quality. Local government has a role to play to address the issue. One of the things we can do is redevelop underutilized properties to expand housing supply. The “Pro-Housing Communities” designation would help us achieve that. Cheektowaga should become a Pro-Housing Community.

The process involves multiple players: the Provincial Government sets broad housing targets, like building 1.5 million homes by 2031, while the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing oversees municipal planning. Municipalities control local zoning and planning decisions, with the Landlord and Tenant Board (LTB) ensuring fair treatment for tenants and landlords. Private developers build within these frameworks, and the Ontario Housing Delivery Fund incentivizes municipalities to meet housing targets.
