Interesting that the latest Ghostbusters film cost $100M to produce (Dune II was reportedly $190M plus another $100M to market it). Great mainstream films can still be made for less, and it would be nice to spread the money and investment around. (Also, there is a really good observation in this article that horror films are driven by the hook/story and not cast driven. Excellent films in that genre can be made for less as a result.)

The Distribution model in Cinema has gone through such a fundamental change that the only content the Studios are willing to make is front-loaded IP with some tentacles in the collective subconscious. (It used to be they sold you the toy “after” the release of the movie. Now they do it before.) This risk aversion, although madenning and seemingly nonsensical to true creatives, will play into their hands now that the pendulum is swinging back towards pure creativity since these Studio pictures have little to say. I suspect a 70’s-style artistic explosion renaissance is on the horizon, only, that sector of the industry will be exclusive to the people who are truly in it for the art, not the paycheck. And theatrical runs will be few and far between, but they will flourish in the streaming space with rare exceptions.
Tim Richards, CEO of Vue testifying to the British Film & High-End TV Inquiry: "This year there are some amazing films coming out of all genres both British, foreign, and Hollywood. But there’s just not enough of them. In 2022, there were 35% fewer films than pre-pandemic. Last year, 20%. This year is probably gonna be close or slightly worse than last year. The good news is that film production has been ramping up. I think we’re gonna see a large number of films return. This is a business worth saving. It’s not broken. We revitalize high streets, we drive footfall to shopping centers. We have been going from strength to strength and I think we’ll see that return.” https://lnkd.in/eG9Ymgqv
