2024 is set to be the hottest year on record. The year places climate mitigation at the forefront of international action. Indeed, expectations from climate negotiations are at their highest. So, as COP29 Azerbaijan concludes, there are important takeaways. There has been a breakthrough on rules for international carbon trading under Article 6.4. The agreement can potentially unlock $250 billion annually to support climate action in developing countries, though there is still some way to go before it can be implemented. COP29 has also introduced bold initiatives to reshape energy systems. The Global Energy Storage and Grids Pledge targets 1,500 GW of energy storage and 25 million kilometres of grid upgrade by 2030. The Green Energy Zones initiative envisions renewable energy through interconnected grids, while the Hydrogen Declaration commits to scaling green hydrogen production and decarbonising fossil-based systems. But with $1.3 trillion of climate finance required annually, the preexisting gap between pledged ($700 million in the Loss and Damage Fund as of last year) and delivered finance persists. Further, meeting global climate goals means scaling renewable energy by 16.4% annually until 2030—a challenge that demands both innovation and collaboration at an unprecedented scale. The developed world has to deliver on accountability: aggressive NDCs, increased funding, and protections for vulnerable communities. The urgency can’t wait! #COP29 #COP29Azerbaijan #ClimateFinance #ClimateAction

Day 5 of COP29 spotlighted how renewable energy is a catalyst for rebuilding post-conflict regions, providing both stability and resilience. Initiatives like solar micro-grids in Gaza and Syria demonstrate the transformative potential of clean energy in humanitarian aid, addressing power needs for hospitals, schools, and communities. The launch of the Baku Call on Climate Action for Peace, Relief, and Recovery underscored the urgent need to align climate action with peace-building efforts. However, critical questions arise: Are international commitments paired with enough financial backing? How do we ensure these solutions reach the most vulnerable populations effectively? Renewables go beyond emissions—they symbolize hope and autonomy for those in crisis. Are we ready to prioritize this intersection of sustainability and recovery at scale? EJN Virtual Media Workshop on Net Zero in Africa 2024 The journey to net zero requires a pivotal shift away from fossil fuels and traditional polluters towards a more carbon-neutral way of living. Africa is a continent home to an abundance of sun, sea, and wind; its renewable energy potential is vast. This reality provides a blueprint of hope for mitigating climate change and climate injustice—but also raises many questions: Who is and should be funding net zero initiatives and is how are these money flows tracked? How does the power dynamic between the Global North and the Global South shape narratives and realities? Which countries are paving the way as leaders in renewable energy, and which are falling behind? https://lnkd.in/dBHxtpvZ
